otispine.jpgThe Pinetoppers: Johnny Jenkins at the front, and Otis Redding in white. In 1971 Johnny Jenkins took Dr. John's voodoo cajun classic I Walk On Gilded Splinters and added some funk, dirty blues swamp guitar and seemingly the Polyphone Spree on backing vocals. The results are stunning. Also featured here are Cher's ex Duane Allman and what sounds like a million drummers.Samples from this track turned up in Beck's Loser and Oasis' Go Let It Out, and the track reached a greater prominence when it was included on the third volume of the excellent Super Breaks compilation series.Johnny himself had been around for an fair few years when I Walk On Guilded Splinters was recorded. He had been touring the Southern US states for some time when in 1961 he pitched up at the Stax Studios to record a session with his band the Pinetoppers. Unfortunately for Johnny his bus driver, Otis Redding, could sing a bit, and he got signed instead. Hi,just found your blog through Spoilt Victorian Childs forum! So far, excellent!Funnily enough,I never really liked Dr Johns original of 'Walk On Gilded Splinters',but I've enjoyed covers of it by Paul Weller and, erm,Cher!(from when Cher had her original face,etc)...and now this one!Excellent stuff.

Cheers for popping by!

I do like the Dr.'s version but I guess he's an acquired taste. Can't imagine either Weller or Cher doing to this, though!
