  1. Not just single men - at the time I had my mental health struggles (they don't go away completely but amazing support and self awareness help) I was and still am very stereotyped - married, mortgaged, parent, outwardly fairly successful in a respected profession - the root cause of mine I believe came from work (subsequently changed) but I learned and feel that pressure to succeed and appear to be successful can have huge negatives on your mental well being if this is something that school grades and societies trajectory have you mapped for in a small community - this is massively magnified on

  2. I also think it's 99 year lease . Something seriously wrong with spending habits currently with government . 38 million for this , 280 million for climate adjustment , ferry terminal , 50 million each year over next few years for pension hole , Prom scheme 25 million , Grandstand scoreboard god knows how much ? , and I'm sure much more along with usual needs . Yet we have a short fall in Health services ,roads a mess all around the Island and worrying ly uncertainties over effect of Brexit and e gaming moving on . It doesn't make sense . They have screwed the ordinary person in the street enou

  4. It doesn't hit suddenly for sure for many . As you get older the ability to fight back from issues is compromised for sure by troubles that you've had to deal with in previous years . It's almost your ability to bounce back gets eroded by stuff you've had to deal with. Of course this differs greatly from person to person but the end result is the same . A feeling of emptiness and no light at the end of the tunnel means if someone isn't strong and doesn't have has support bad thoughts take over ... We all need a purpose and a goal in life and a reason to fight .What you see everyday in a perso

  5. I've known quite a few over the years with suicidal tendencies, and they were mainly comeovers who had left the city "rat race" to get away from something or maybe to find some inner peace with a slower pace of life. One of them was a business partner who, on one shocking day, asked me to hold his head under a bath of water that he was sitting in fully clothed. I was quite young at the time and I was flabbergasted. Others I knew actually managed the deed. I think that whatever they were running away from was actually a part of their psyche that they could not escape. They brought it to the Isl

  6. I was very lucky that when I actually imploded (carefully chosen word) I had amazing support around me of family and friends - plus one very senior colleague who essentially appeared from nowhere and was just amazing - sharing unnecessarily her own issues with no judgement or knowledge of "me" and basically held my hand towards help sources that she had previously utilised. She still checks in on me every now and again as I do with her - I don't need to meet for coffee or speak on a regular basis but whenever our paths cross in an M&S queue or Victoria St lunch hour a look and a "How are t

  7. I can also understand totally as been so low but inwardly luckily I'm strong and didn't succumb . But it was a close call truthfully ! . Knowing the chances of help in the short term are near zero..i.e. In days etc . You know that if been under the service for any length of time so you just don't bother with them as rejection , which it actually is , is hard to take . No where to turn too is a real problem. Luckily I had some great friends but even then you feel guilty as you don't want to bother anyone. Then there is people who have no one and there is lots out there . No it's got to be l

  13. It is only worth remembering if you ask for something different next time. If you vote for someone else promising the same arrangement you had with the last representative clearly nothing will change, no matter what else they are promising besides (that which they cannot promise because they have literally no power to achieve). In the case of the sewage charge Hansard shows that it was promised during the original vote debate that a full review on the equity of the charge would take place before it was increased again. Did that happen?

  15. So happy for you that you had that one person and I'm sure a few more..so makes all the difference knowing someone's on your side. Dealing with that seemingly isolation is so so tough ..I'm alone so it's made it really hard but one particular friend every week would meet me and to this day we still do when possible .blessed to have had him to help me

  16. Your so right in your observations and analysis . Add to the mix anxiety and you have the perfect storm. And totally I can relate to having to live up to my fathers standing in the community which I never was going to be able to do which was the start of my issues . And totally not just single men your right and equally not just men of course . Mental health is a real problem over here and sadly not getting any easier to get the help that's needed . I'm so glad you got through it and in a better place my friend . Onwards and upwards right ?

  17. It's so hard to understand how someone can do something like this. I mean I can't stick a pin in myself because you know it hurts etc. Ive really struggled with mental health issues and been really low and although have never considered this sort of thing I can so understand if someone is not as strong situations can tip you over the edge ...I remember when much younger walking in on a uncle hanging from a banister having hung himself. Obviously planned and thought out as letterbox blocked up along with curtains closed etc doors locked and sheets all locked together etc. how low and desperate

Homes all over the UK and further afield are being put on the market as individuals and families up sticks in response to DestinationIoM articles and Laurence Skelly's picture. "Build it and they will come". Must be true, it was on the telly (in the hedgehog wildlife advert/thingy).

  22. Quite frankly some of the breakfast prices in various 'trendy' establishments on this island are bloody bordering on criminal. Do they ever stop to think that they may get more people onboard if they had a reasonable pricing policy?

  23. Fortunately it's cleaner in there now than it was a couple of years back. It used to be filthy. £11 for a cooked brekky in there (or anywhere short of the Ritz) is taking the piss though. Plenty of places doing just as good a meal for less than that.

  26. Over the years I have known four people who have committed suicide, three of them were the last people in the world you would have guessed had problems they must have been bottling their feelings up whilst putting on a good face, the last was a bit fragile but still very unexpected. I think talking helps, it does not matter who to just relieving the pressure and despair. I feel for this family.

Not a pretty sight and feeling so sad that someone went as far as that. Also the family and children etc left behind. I did put my two penny's worth in to tell people to back off etc as there was no way the Police could or should have done anymore than they did. It's the world we live in sadly !.

  31. i'm not sure it ever hits suddenly, i think people finally give up or lose the strength to hold on which they may have been struggling with doing for years. i guess the common causes are relationships breaking down, money, or your own health/pain . then you get suicide bombers but i don't group them in the same category.

So Andrew, who was binned off by his charities and told not to show his face in public for the foreseeable after he aired his wierd excuses for hanging out with a convicted child sex trafficker, (as previously stated, I acknowledge that he isn’t a convicted nonce himself, even if his mate was), is, according to you, Rog, worthy of public funding, whereas Afghanistan, Invicta Games, etc etc, Harry doesn’t deserve a penny. We already know you are sick, and I can only guess at why you sympathise with one prince over the other. Ugh. Tell me it’s not what I’m thinking because it is disgusting. Is

  39. It's funny you say 'guy' because we all assume it's a man. It's sadly the case that men are much more at risk of it than women. There is no safety net for single men. I understand why someone can be brought that low, especially here.

  41. No-one is getting a £6k pay rise. The English government is abolishing the bottom points of the lower pay spine because there is a teacher recruitment crisis and they realise schools are having to pay more to attract people into the profession. Only teachers recruited after September 2021 will benefit from this. Because teachers’ pay here is still linked to England, this change would also have automatically been applied here. It is nothing to do with the pay deal. The pay deal, which has not yet been approved by the members of only one of the four teaching unions is for an uplift base

  46. They have to find out if there is, unlikely I know, a contingency plan in place to move this forward. And they do that by asking daft questions as an opening salvo and then pinning the minister down more and more as the evasive answers get ever more desperate. That's island politics for you....

  47. What about charging yourself interest on a loan you owe yourself on money you borrowed off yourself. Then wipe off that debt you owed youself, congratulating yourself on the fact you paid off a debt you owed yourself. So that you will not have to keep charging yourself interest on a loan you owed yourself.

  48. The last thing we need is a private health provider coming in to run our NHS. Our main problem here is the growing problem of frailty and patients with multiple medical problems. Private providers simply cherry-pick straightforward cases and leave complexity to the NHS. They want to make profit, and the problem is that health care costs. Private medicine, in my view, is equivalent to first-class air travel. NHS is economy. Both will get you where you need to go, safely, but if you want to pay you get to choose when and where, get a more comfortable journey, and have wine with your meal
