  2. I think it's the parents are the problem. One kid texts Mum with an exaggerated tale. She posts it on Facebook. Other Mums are join in. Try to ring the school. Can't get through because there's a 1000 Mums trying to talk to one receptionist. Mums convince themselves it's Columbine and descend on the school. In the past, you'd get home tell your Mum "Billy brought a knife to school", and she'd say "That's nice dear" becasue it was all over and done with when she got to hear about it.

  3. For me, I think its a mix of the two. Pretty much everyone has roots elsewhere than where they were born. At what stage does someone stop being a product of their heritage and become a product of the place they were born (and vice versa)? In the end, does it actually matter? People are people, there are good people everywhere and there are bad people everywhere. Only idiots judge people based on where they were born or who they were born to.

  4. The lower school in Douglas used to have the lower years and the upper had the upper and a lower year. The lower now has the lower, higher up, while the upper has the upper, lower upper and upper upper lower down. Staff have to travel up to lower from upper and down to upper from lower. I cannot see what the problem is.

  5. Just read the Facebook rants, it's the school's fault, what are the government going to do about it? Why were ALL the parents not contacted straight away blah blah blah! It sounds like a minor incident which was quickly and properly dealt with.

  11. Call me cynical. It's taken 5.5 months to produce these figures, in respect of the FOM anyway. Previous year's figures have been released within a few weeks of the event taking place. Why the delay? Secondly, a slight increase of 390 odd visitors for the FOM over last year? Where were all these people then? The place was EMPTY. Race footage from the bikes showed empty hedgerow viewing areas and grandstands. My regular homestays for FOM also alluded to it in broken English, "We are here alone!" Sorry. I don't believe it. Not. One. Word.

  14. Innocent until found guilty this case should not even be in the public domain and the constant airing of it is pathetic.

  15. I think it's more than just axe-grinding. The accusations against Dr Byrne are pretty serious ones: This isn't just some inappropriate out-of-hours shenanigans, he's accused of carrying on this relationship during working hours and using the 'treatment' to cover it up. And most critically of a patient who is vulnerable and possibly being exploited. I'm very surprised to hear that he hasn't been suspended. Though it's possible he is only engaged in administrative duties, even that could be inappropriate given the allegation of dishonest record-keeping. But (as I keep on saying) the real puzzler here is what is happening to this case. It has been suspended since July - there's no evidence the planned November continuation took place. No further date seems to have been set. There's only one other case in the same position and that's had four sittings since September. Clearly this is not the normal way that GMC tribunals take place.

  18. How is it axe grinding? The case was widely reported and people might naturally be questioning the logic of allowing a person to continue to work with vulnerable patients (ie, people with serious mental health issues) while allegations of this nature have been made and are being investigated.

  22. Yes, you said. The FoM has always been very quiet in comparison to TT week, it used to be that you would forget it was even on as there were no bikes, no tourists and hence road closures for racing could come as a shock. Not so any more, the bikes are noticeable and there are obviously tourists around. Visitor figures are going up each year, they have doubled since 2009 (from c.8000 to c.16000). Still 30,000 less people that the TT though but moving in the right direction.

  26. Correct. The GMC also has powers to suspend a doctor from the register and therefore stop them from working until a final decision can be made. The fact that they haven't chosen to, tells me that their risk assessment must have concluded that this doctor's continued practice poses a low risk to patients

  30. I've been reading around the history of the British Raj (British direct rule) in India (1858-1947) and grappling with the question "Why did it last so long before the Indians got independence?". And I've come up with two principal reasons: 1. The British saturated India with hundreds of regiments of soldiers who were there for the express purpose of kicking the sh*te out of any natives who dared to express resistance; and 2. A lot of the Indians preferred British rule to the alternative which was rule by the maharajahs (the indigenous Indian aristocracy) as in the former Mogul empire, when they had the power of life and death over their subjects and it was basically a mosaic of corrupt dictatorships and warlords without any real rule of law. At least under the British you were oppressed in a consistent way instead of an arbitrary and corrupt way.

  32. A country mile is a very short distance to someone who knows the route well. When asking for directions from someone who is local to an area, how often do you get told that "it's just round the corner", only to find that there are several corners before you get to that one?

  33. Well now, I had a great experience, as usual. at the hospital. Within five minutes of my appointment time. Everybody involved very professional, kind and explaining everything they were about to do. As I've said many, many times I have had one bad experience in all of the island hospitals over all the years and that was due to an extremely arrogant consultant who seemed to forget that some of us are at least as qualified in our own areas as he is in his, probably have more life experience and expect a little bit of respect from everyone irrespective of who they think they are. I repeat, on the whole our health service is as good as can be expected.

  34. I don't really have an angle on it Manxy, I was just curious. A friend of mine was preaching about how he will only use the ferry as flights are (apparently) so bad. But I wondered whether a 20 minute blast on an Easyjet flight is any worse than a C.3 hour crossing on the boat as it chugs over to Merseyside. As you say, I suspect we'll keep needing both for the foreseeable future.

  36. Utter tripe. Trade is a two way street. There are companies in EU member states that will want to trade with companies in the UK, and there are companies in the UK that will want to trade with companies in EU member states. To think that the UK does not need to interact with the EU is naive. Is 615000 million pounds of trade just going to stop? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_largest_trading_partners_of_United_Kingdom

  40. It is time to draw a line under this apparent "axe grinding" and move on. If PC is genuinely concerned about patient safety, he/she should take it up directly with the GMC instead of sniping anonymously here. There are much much bigger fish to fry at Noble's
