  1. Indeed we do, which is why we are all entitled to express an opinion and criticise decisions. After all, politicians are not demigods and their duty (transparency, honesty and accountability) is to the population not the other way around.

  3. What was announced today was not a move to Level 2. The main point of Level 2 was to allow non resident mitigated travel. (See the IOMG exit strategy document). The stated reason for this not happening is the UK 14 day case rate being above 30/100K. A secondary reason was concern over the impact of the 'India' Variant. The point about case rates had been discussed on this thread today. The reduction of isolation requirements for residents and groups already permitted announced today is welcome, but it is not the major change associated with Level 2.

  5. To be fair to Dr Ewart she did demonstrate on todays briefing that she knew the Indian variant was called the Indian variant because it comes from India. Well, who knew....

  6. It is beggars’ belief as to why DA has been awarded the MBE. My issue though is that HE has not covered herself with glory either (I am not going into the SPC farce that happened on her watch, which further justifies my opinion that she is not up to the job as a Director of Public Health). It is inconceivable that DA did not discuss with HE all of the medical solutions to the Covid crisis, including Dr Glover’s methods and proposals. It seems to me that HE, being a typical bureaucrat, was afraid to think ‘outside the box’ and was either incapable of comprehending Dr Glover’s ground breaking scientific methodology, or simply opted for a safest possible advice - i.e., follow what the UK are doing. Then, when Dr Glover did not go quietly, ‘they’ decided to go after her. It is fair to say that a year ago the UK, like the rest of Europe and the USA, were in a state of chaos – the virus was out of control, cases were skyrocketing and people were dying. In this situation genomics would have not been a central part of the UK’s health strategy, mass lockdown measures were the only practical policy. Also, the UK would have been aware, that while these lockdowns were happening, vaccines were ‘on the way’. They took this risk, and fortuitously, that risk paid off, a rare occasion when Bo Jo’s swashbuckling bravado worked. I am not going to regurgitate the point that had been laboured to death on the MF - that other countries saw the situation differently and embraced the genomic opportunities earlier on. The decision to appoint Dr Glover to the EAG, which was formed 12 months later than it should have been, is nonetheless welcome news. But it is not enough. It seems to me that the much-promised rebuttal to Dr Glover’s allegations has either been withdrawn or been put on the (indefinite) back burner (Probably because the IOMG has very few facts that support its case?) In which case, the IOMG should issue formal apology to Dr Glover. I also think that it is about time that HE sails into the sunset with either resignation or retirement, whatever is appropriate. As for DA, I agree with sentiments that for his own wellbeing, he should take a career break from politics. Hopefully he will use his time-off to reflect on his performance and ask himself a brutally honest question: “Did I have skills, abilities and aptitude to represent my constituents, let alone to be a Health Minister for the whole country in their time of need?”

  7. They might as well cancel all gigs from off Island artists for the rest of the year, plus TT, S100 & MGP for next year if they're going to wait for the UK case rate to drop. It will rise with things opening up more, but if hospitalisations and deaths don't rise, and IOMG carry on as we are, it will be years before Manx hospitality etc can benefit. Perhaps they're moving so slowly in the hope that all the roadworks will finally be finished before they let the tourists in.

  15. How do you define democracy? Palestine has elections. And once again, comparing Israel to Palestine is not particularly fair. Israel gets billions in foreign aid, and immeasurable support. Palestinians have been forcibly evicted as more and more of their land is taken for half a dozen decades. In some cases, 3 generations of people have lived and died in the same refugee camp. That's not living. It's barely even surviving. Gaza is effectively an open air prison, the West Bank is under military rule, Israel frequently gives itself legal permission to do things like its "open fire" rule, which has resulted in the killings of medics, journalists and children by snipers. Israel controls the electricity, water and food into Gaza, often providing not enough - deliberately. There are reports today of Israel using white phosphorus (after disconnecting the electricity supplies, again.) It simply isn't possible for people to build a working state under those conditions. Nobody is suggesting Hamas has done no wrong. But Christ alive, there's scales of wrong. Israel is an oppressor. Terrorism almost always comes as a result of occupation and oppression.

  19. I have said it before on here. They tell us not to focus on case numbers (for obvious reasons, they are irrelevant and will rise) Then use them to determine our way forward. Absolutely insane. The general vibe I got today was positive. I think they will move away from cases in the UK and move everything forward, they are just being careful how they do it so they don't scare the doommongers too much. I have just booked six separate trips away between now and the end of July in addition to the one already booked in hope. Finally getting a life back

  20. We know that the link between cases and morbidity is being significantly stretched by the vaccines. There appears to be no recognition of this fact in the strategy. If they stick to the document's trigger points regarding case rates, we will not be getting anywhere near level 2 for a very long time.
    3 points
  21. Yes - that should go without saying. However, they need to move away from the sole reliance on case rates as a driver for changes to the exit strategy. It's not just hospitality, but for airlines and many businesses too.
    3 points
  22. Very disappointing to hear that the exit strategy is still only considering UK 14 day case rates rather than how those cases translate into healthcare demand. These rates are only going to go up as the UK unlocks, so unless there is a change in policy we will indeed become akin to Brigadoon. If the vaccines do their stuff what do case rates matter?. If they'd just put it down to the 'India' Variant, I could understand.

The link from Gef with their Linkedins: Live at Home CEO Jacqueline Bridson Steven Christian Peter Davidson Professor Peter Edge from Oxford Brookes University Julie Hotchkiss John Spellman Jonathan Wild Rob Mercer MLC would serve as the Tynwald representative to the EAG. I think I've got the right Julie Hotchkiss though the only link with the Island I can see is that she did Marine Biology at Liverpool. Edited to add: Yes it's that one. The bios and method of appointment are in the Tynwald Memo.

  27. But... the Island has not been free for people to practice their sexual orientation for very long. Certainly not in most forum members lifetime. Even then the Island only changed its legislation because we were forced to. So don't be so hasty to point fingers because this Island is no champion of personal freedoms.

  29. It’s typical Josem. 100% misrepresentation. Spun for effect. Factually inaccurate. He’s used the prom start date as the day it was announced that plans were to be drawn up to redevelop. 2015. Work didn’t start until 3.5 years ( 1250 days ) later. That’s like including the 5 years ( 1800 days ) of the pre WW2 arms race and the Germans walking into the Rhineland, Austria and Czech Republic in the years before September 1939 as part of WW2. And I’m not sure about operation overlord lasting 544 days? It was the invasion and occupation of Normandy. It started 6 June 1944 and ended either 25/8/44 with Liberation of Paris or 12/9/44 when the armies that had fought through Normandy joined up with the Allied forces that had fought up from Southern France. So 90-110 days, not 544. Even if you count Overlord as being the complete invasion to VE Day it’s 330 days not 544. Overlord was followed by Market Garden from 17/9/44 and other operations.

  32. Not sure if this FT Story is available generally - it's via Google News, but it's a good analysis of how Bibi's Outside-In plan to use normalising relations with outside Arab regimes - Bahrain, UAE etc as a way of encouraging moderation from the likes of Hamas has really hit a bump in the road as Internal Palestinian radicalism (inflamed by Bibi's policies) has resulted in violence the Arab states cannot be seen to back. I know it goes against Helix's rhetoric, but Trump and Bibi were following a strategy to get Hamas et al to accept a 2-state solution. That 2-state solution was on Israel's terms, but it was far more than Helix's maps would claim. I find some of Helix's cartoon farcical - Hamas is genocidal and wants a genocide against Israel. Israel would accept a 2 state solution if it got rid of Hamas. That was the idea of the Outside in Plan - the fact it has failed is a failute for Bibi's diplomacy right at the end of his career. Sharon gambled for peace and Hamas wrecked it. It is possible Bibi is the same, but no matter his plans are in tatter as Arabs unite over the blood shed in Gaza.

  37. I agree completely but it's a damned if you do damned if you don't scenario as you can bet if they hadn't charged there would be a question in Keys about money spent on it and a 8 month total figure that waters eyes and causes loud choruses of rhubarb and harrumph

  38. I suspect they just took a figure out of the air that was less than what was being commercially charged. But because they were insisting on three tests per person it was still a lot more for travellers. Whether it acted as a 'deterrent' I don't know - most people affected were probably too well off to care or forced to go off-Island anyway. Charging was always a stupid policy in the circumstances, but there is this obsession in the Civil Service about showing that you are 'commercially aware' even if the process ends up costing more money than it makes.
