  1. So nearly 2 years into this disaster and we identify a new strain of concern in a particular part of the world. The UK imposes restrictions on travel from some countries and implements an isolate and test regime for anyone entering the country from outside the CTO, and additionally announce masks becoming compulsory again in England. Meanwhile IOMG arrange lots of meeting and do nothing to either take temporary measures while they get a handle on things or to calm the nerves of those who panic. IOMG allow 21 people recently returned from SA to crack on as normal and visit packed pubs, clubs, theatres and workplaces. Surely with 2YEARS to plan for this inevitable development there is a clear roadmap of steps and actions to be taken that could have been implemented? Pre written public statements etc. A simple procedure to be followed in the event a new variant of concern rears its head and simple actions we take? Surely there is a pre written plan and messaging to the public should the UK ever reimplement mask wearing? There was a UK briefing last night. They should have had a plan in place that means local guidance is published within a couple of hours of the UK making any changes. TWO FU****G YEARS!!! Incidentally, I couldn’t care less and just want to live my life, but I understand others are very nervous and need to feel the gov are on top of things and have a plan in place. An announcement and clear guidance on what they are doing in response last night would have led people to feel like it was in hand and under control. It is piss poor communication and planning AGAIN. It doesn’t even have to be about what the message is. It’s just about getting a message out quickly and clearly and instilling confidence in people.

  2. Yes, say what you’re going to say, take questions, and once Paul Moulton et al are done with it, summarise the main message so it’s the last thing you hear and take away. Textbook.

  4. It's the old adage, introduce what you are going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you have just told them. But..... The comments on FB were hilarious. I am convinced the majority are thick as two short planks, completely unable to understand what has been said to them.

  6. The Committee shall comprise: Chief Minister (Chair) Minister for Health & Social Care Treasury Minister Minister for Justice & Home Affairs Minister for Education, Sport and Culture Officers routinely in attendance – Director of Public Health Cabinet Office – Chief Operating Officer Cabinet Office – Senior Covid Response Officer DHSC Chief Executive & Chair of Isle of Man Joint Public Health and Clinical Advisory Group Head of Government Communication Secretariat External attendees – The Chair of the Council of Ministers Emergency Advisory Group Then presumably the Chief Secretary goes away and tell them to do whatever he wanted them to do in the first place.

  7. This is a much better and refreshing approach. By encouraging people rather than forcing them to do the right thing, you gain more buy in from the public. 10 out of 10 from me.

  8. God, could you imagine giving children and their parents a choice to have a safe and effective vaccine? Inhumane really.

  9. Daphne Caine isnt in Comin, is she? And I don’t think she will be part of the National Covid Response Group, so I’m not sure there is much she can do about the latest Covid developments. She might as well crack on and enjoy her Sunday - well, as much as she can, without her culture and style-guides.

  11. Our sea terminal is fine. It has what 3 arrivals a day, people are in and out those waiting to board have a coffee shop and somewhere to gey papers if they so wish. We are not an international hub so we don't need an all singing all dancing ferry port

  12. 😀 ’Every time you think you understand, you end up doing the opposite. If I have to explain the joke then it takes away from the skill Involved in the giving and receiving of my type of dry humour. You either get it or you don’t and you don’t.

  14. Or perhaps its sensible to mitigate the risk as much as you can, even if there are times when you can't. I've never understood this line of comment from some of the covid deniers (and I'm not suggesting you are one) about not having to wear a mask to eat or whatever and the resulting "lol good job covid knows when you're eating". It's literally just about mitigating risk when it's not impossible/a massive pain to do so. Reducing risk some of the time is still an improvement on reducing risk none of the time.

  17. Why does there need to be a scoreboard? Years ago it was to keep people updated on progress. Now we have live radio, transponders and smart phones. Total wast of time and money. Spend the cash on better radio coverage and a decent app. It is 2021, not 1907

  24. So the takeaway is be sensible, with a bit more testing of arrivals to bring us in-line with the UK. Sounds reasonably pragmatic.

  25. There'll be many, many more cases popping up over the next few weeks. The SA GP in question operates a private clinic and so it's only her patients that are getting tested. There'll be many millions more who don't have access to private primary care walking around with this new variant.

  27. Trying to keep it out is pointless. It will get here anyway (if it isn’t already) Get your jabs. Stay home if you want. Wear masks if you want. Everyone should have their own choice if they want to take precautions or not, no one should have restrictions forced onto them anymore. It will Be interesting to see what Alf says. If there are any restrictions on travel to and from the UK people will freak.

  29. Or maybe they’re just the opposite of Quayle and Ashford. Both of whom were, on the surface, reasonably calm and sounded as though they really seemed to be on top of all this (whereas, behind the scenes they fumbled and jumbled and worked through personal issues in a very egotistical and bombastic fashion). Maybe they are not slick because they’re not slick people, but it would appear that behind the scenes, they are talking to, and negotiating with a diverse range of organisations. Walking the walk is a lot more involved than just talking the talk. There will be a lot going on right now behind the scenes so perhaps it’s not unsurprising that mistakes were made. I’d rather they were a government who talked and worked collaboratively with other services and didn’t sound so good in briefings than the sneering, evasive, patronising, lying, duplicitous, manipulative shysters we had before with their ‘slick’ presentations.

  33. Live update from London right now: about half of people are wearing masks in shops, about 70odd% on the tube. Not seen any shops ask for masks either. No social distancing to be seen anywhere and few fucks given. There’s crimbo shopping to be done after all. Also: bringing your own chair on the tube is next level. Respect.

  34. Reasonable to take precautions - testing and quarantine from affected areas - but nothing to panic about. No suggestion existing vaccines won’t stop you getting ill, and here and UK we’re 90%+ aren’t we? I can see why places like Austria might be worried though - 35% unvaxxed and potentially susceptible could mean health services fall over, given that in the first wave when we weren’t vaxxed at all it only needed about 3% to get infected (before total lockdown) to see scenes from Italy looking like warzones.

  41. Liverpool is a much better port than Heysham, a swift walk or short bus ride and you are in the city centre with Lime Street providing a good comprehensive train service . Heysham is ok if you have transport on foot it is dire. We need a docking facility in Liverpool.

  42. You’d be naive to think any conspiracy would be so overt and public. If all the conspiracy theorists were onto something, they’d be shut down far more quickly. A virus doing what a virus does is hardly an extraordinary occurrence. Bad strains of things appear all the time. Just look at swine flu for example.

  44. The Sea Terminal is one of the finest designed buildings on the island. This should be registered. It need modernisation but with great care. Start with removing the outside additions like the hideous windows/ rooms that have been built under the "crown" to give it back its style. Criminal if this was dropped.

  45. Haha nice try but I'm not Courtney. I'm double vaxxed and will get the booster when they get around to offering it to my age range. But I don't understand why some people are acting like the vaccines were somehow bullet proof and stopped transmission? And now this new moronic variant evades it. You get vaccinated because it generally will stop you getting properly fucked up with covid and it cuts transmission a little. But we've known for months that doubled vaxxed people can still spread it, so let's stop acting like that's a new thing.
