  1. Could you elaborate and explain what you think my "nonsense" was? Feel free to give specifics, time points, how it distracted - exactly - from the "job in hand".

  2. They need to install abut 400m of approach lights out into the sea to get the RVR required down to 550m from the current 1000m. It can be further reduced to 300m using CAT2 approaches, that would require less approach lights but better lighting on the airfield itself. For an airfield that is so prone to sea fog and low cloud, not to mention its importance as a lifeline link to the outside world, it beggars belief that the airport lacks the kit to allow the pilots to do their job to their potential. I’ve operated into all of the UK’s commercial airports, big and small, and nowhere has basic lights like what we do. It really is crap.

  7. I think David Ashford has set about the task of thoroughly justifying his removal from Government very admirably. He should not have been allowed to resign but sacked by the CM before his arrogance and attention-seeking made the decision to not get rid of him immediately look ill-judged. He is merely a nothing of a man who has been given the opportunity of looking important beyond any actual worth and is now stamping his little feet because it has been taken away from him. Please David, just go into the corner and stroke your medal and yourself where nobody has to witness it.

  9. You would think that with Alf’s “Night of the Long Knives” in full swing, Longworth might be feeling a bit uncomfortable right now, but he’s such an arrogant twat..... However, it is well known that he wants to be in charge for the Steam Railway’s 150th Birthday, next year, so he can show off to his mates. So there is a real opportunity for Crookall to put him under real pressure, then kick him out and spoil his party. Come on Tim. Everyone cut you a bit of slack when you took this job on. But the honeymoon is now over. It’s time show who is boss.

  11. "Time or inclination " , you clearly haven't a clue . Dr Glover's advice/help was rejected by those who were prepared to let folk die rather than admit their own abysmal lack of competence . For her to remain silent would IMO make her complicit and the easy way out for a coward such as yourself. I salute her Do not presume to speak for other posters ,( you cheeky young pup), you are for reasons best known to yourself clearly motivated by malice I am one of the Dr Glover's ardent supporters and I have not revised my opinion and regard your ill-informed outbursts as laughable as you seem incapable of providing any evidence for your ludicrous assertions. FWIW I was an EHO back in the mid 60's dealing with outbreaks of typhoid/ polio/ TB across . Would I be correct in assuming that your experience/ knowledge in relation to matters medical is similar to that of Mr Ashford ?

  12. Did an ex partner of yours run off with a teacher or did one do some serious damage to you? Your hatred of teachers is a bit OTT on the face of it, but It could be explained if you are a victim? Is that the reason? I think teachers get a good holiday entitlement but also have to put up with kids. I could not do their job for all the money in the world, never mind the good holidays...................

  14. Crookall is clearly getting fed up with this. He went and had a meeting with Tours recently himself from what he said in the Keys on Tuesday. Allegedly Bus Vannin are only supposed to be supplying transport if Tours haven't capacity. Which makes sense as cruise passengers expect to be moved around on coaches not buses. But he also referred to some cruise companies 'refusing' to use Tours, which sounds to me as if BV have cut a deal with them. Possibly via DfE who has a person who is supposed to organise all this. Two listening files on this: 1.15. Bus services for cruise ship passengers – Guaranteed availability https://www.tynwald.org.im/business/listen/AgainFiles/O-202201-0383a.mp3 1.16. Bus service cancellations – Number since 14th May; similar tram and train issues https://www.tynwald.org.im/business/listen/AgainFiles/O-202201-0384a.mp3

  17. There are a number of factors in play here. Firstly, I suspect Gary doesn't actually want to go. Through that, and his relationship with the DHA there may have been, shall we say an 'over-egging' of what is actually required here. The Isle of Man Police, if it operated a truly empowered model and trained its staff to the highest standards at all level, and worked on a basis of the habit of trust, is not a difficult organisation to run. It is full of decent, hard-working, motivated people who just want to be able to get on with their job and for that to be facilitated by good leadership. It is five years today since I walked out of the front door of Dukes Avenue, leaving my warrant at the door. In that time I've been privileged to stay in touch with many former colleagues still serving, but also to meet and build relationships with a significant number of senior officers, both serving and recently retired. The fact of the matter is that any decent contemporary Superintendent from a provincial or metropolitan UK force could comfortably occupy the Chief Constable's seat on the Isle of Man. They are working in an incredibly complex world, and their capacity, political nous and ability to process masses of information and deploy their resources effectively is inspirational. The Island has its complexities, but there is nowhere near the tempo of UK operations. I do believe that Dan Davies has been encouraged to look above far too high a bar. So why are people not applying? There are a number of factors. The first is that the adverts collided with an unprecedented number of ACC vacancies. Therefore, the talent stayed put, and the next tranche was promoted into the Supt and Ch Supt roles that were made available as a result. Secondly, I am told that there is a lack of understanding at the DHA as to how a modern CC might operate. They seem to be expecting them to relocate lock, stock and barrel here. As with Mike Langdon, all that is needed is a solid footprint - a flat or house to operate from so that family links can be maintained in the UK and time can be spent away to decompress. IF the force had maintained a Deputy Chief Constable model - which could be comfortably be filled by a local Superintendent in the old mode where that was their nominal rank, then it would be easy to model. As it is, the Chief has become all-powerful, with no intermediary to step up automatically in their absence. I think many of us still believe the removal of this rank in the force was a serious strategic error. And that brings us to another issue; the DHA has no 'tactical advisor' in respect of policing other than the CC. Therefore it will be inclined to do as it is told. I suspect if they had the good sense to take on a recently retired UK DCC or CC as a consultant on a retainer, who they could ring for another perspective, then things might well be different. As it is, the initial debacle of being unable to anoint a Deputy (interesting we now need one after many years without) was a good indicator of where things were going. I've spoken to a number of people who would have been exceptional candidates for the job. They've had a look, but are discouraged by the isolation, the politics, and the lack of flexibility at the DHA in terms of their personal life and work balance. If you cannot entice people to move for 150 grand a year and 20% tax, there is something far wrong. maybe the recent tranche of resignations and the Ranson case might be a flag to candidates that change is possible. In the interim, the sensible thing to do would be to get the failed local candidate away on the Strategic Command Course, and start to develop them for at least the DCC post/ CC interim so that Gary can get his retirement plans underway.

  24. Bus Vannin have around 60 'proper' buses. In the UK, this would be a small depot operation, managed by a graduate recruit, as their first job out of training. That said, they would have central support for aspects like HR, Finance, Procurement etc. which sound awfully like what Bus Vannin have! So why we need a small army of directors, managers, engineers, schedulers........ There needs to be a fundamental rethink on how it is set-up, which doesn't involve Longworth, or any of his cronies.

  25. That all you’re ever going to get though. We’ve made up this plan. We’re going to deliver it. Then 5 years later when nothing has happened. We make up another plan. We’re going to deliver this now. Ad infinitum. Some people there have been claiming to deliver ‘things’ for 20 years and delivered nothing. Because they couldn’t even deliver milk.

  28. Indeed, ordinarily I would concur, however regarding Dim Tim's comment to the Keys as @Numbnuts posted above: Mr Crookall said an amended festival timetable would be released soon, but warned "we can only provide what services we can with the drivers we have at any one time". Bus Vannin was currently up to 12 drivers short as a result of a combination of high sickness levels and people retiring or leaving, he added. I go back to 2013 when IL/NB/GC with the firm backing of Tim Crookall (who don't forget was the Minister responsible for 'throwing away £350,000 + goodness knows how much on The Cabbage - Dim Tim told Tynwald that it was an 'essential' piece of kit in 2012, though obviously not that 'essential' as it has been inoperable since it arrived), the DCCL took draconian measures to change the working practices and wages of the drivers, resulting in several strikes including during the 2013 TT fortnight. This further resulted in sackings, drivers resigning with accusations of bullying and the Zero hour contracts that we have now. This draconian approach by Bell, Black, Crookall, Cregeen and the chief protagonist Longworth is the reason we are struggling with drivers, and the reason buses are unavailable. Longworth should be engaging with Tours but his ego is stopping him because it could be perceived that he is losing face if he does accept their offer to help. It is all coming back to bite Crookall on the arse, and he is still spouting utter shite, as did his replacement/predecessor. Once again the Minister in charge of BV is being puppeteered!

  29. I've said it ad nauseam but, the previous 'Management' were not interested in managing, they were interested in 'developing', a completely different ethos and skill set. I hope the new guy is customer focused, and realises that not everything the customer needs costs millions, some of which costs very little but would make a huge difference. I sincerely hope HR have got the appointment right this time as their mistakes have cost the airport badly !

  30. We are way off topic now, but the day one of these electric vehicles catches fire on a steam packet ferry it will definitely be a local news topic. They have gone up in tunnels and in car parks and caused absolute mayhem. The idea of one on a ferry is grim.

  32. It’s only what we used to do before there were any road markings. We all just filtered in. It’s common sense. Europeans will deal with them no problem. It’ll be fine. Stop with all the hating and the doomsaying on the roundels. Embrace them. Bikers have to read the road all the time. After a couple of days they’ll have it sorted and the traffic will flow much better. We’re going to come to love them sometime anyway (we always do with new stuff like this) so join me in loving them now! 😄

  38. I still think that there should be a return to a dedicated roads patrol unit with dedicated patrol vehicles, just like there used to be. There really is no logical reason for not having this system. Of course they trot out the usual lame excuse of saving money which of course, in reality, it doesn't. Just the presence of a roads patrol makes a massive difference to driver behaviour.

  45. The only rebuttal will be more shite and excuses. Ashford is an embarrassment who should lie low, lick his wounds, keep quiet then I’m sure the Manx establishment will forget his overall wallyness, and reappoint him another ministerial role. If he wants to spew vengeance and go after those he feels has wronged him, then he has to be sure he hasn’t got lots of skeletons rattling around. Social media will get him.
