  1. Well I'm gratified that with reorganisation comes increased efficiency......

My wife waited just over two years for a procedure ...... she had it done at the end of August.

Tonight a phone call from the department wanting to book her in to have it done ! bit like buses I guess you wait for one then ........

  2. On a slightly wider note it seems poor forward thinking to me that Ballasalla used to have a bank and a post office together with small shops most of which have now gone but yet a huge estate is being built. Castletown is now going to benefit from 96 new houses I read on a noticeboard and yet facilities are closing there too !

So, if it's "unlikely to be finished on time", is this a euphemism for "even further over budget"?

We started at £3 - £5M didn't we, Phil? That rose incrementally until we got to the last figure which IIRC was £40M? Any bets on where this is going to finish for our "Cars and Nice people only, no Nasty Wagons and Freight", Terminal?

I think we actually started at zero !

Yes, just listened to it too. He was incredulous that Quayle & Co apparently didn't know until the public announcement by the bank and that whilst Harmer and Boot have both now spoken in respect of Peel (for what it's worth), not a peep has been heard from the southern elected. Now who are they again...?

ETA. Of course it's just as well that we've got the Chinese concerns ready to step into the gap.

Dumb and Dumber you mean !  One is too busy promoting a developer and an unneeded by pass, the other is thinking of more questions to ask which are of little priority in the current climate. Neck deep in Gravy can't open their mouths for fear of drowning !

we should ask the Punjab National Bank to open a branch

They would be about as remote as IOM Bank are becoming ! Maybe now the IOM should licence use of its branding with a caveat that you actually do have to be a bank here !!

  6. It is clear that the island is run at a level somewhere remote from our Politicos !

There is an unarguable case that there are too many of them and the attached pomp and circumstance just add to the cost.

If any of them had even the remotest interest of the island at heart they would take an opportunity to reform and get a grip on the Civil Service and themselves, it is however one self serving gravy train whose achievements do not reflect its cost !

  7. Very interesting posts regarding the fleet and selling etc !

As with many things I am not sure the strategies employed by major UK operators translate into the islands situation. Surely usage, mileage etc, all have a bearing on the costs associated with running older vehicles and a well maintained older vehicle does not necessarily mean unreliable or more costly !

Once again in the current situation there is surely a case for someone being told to "cut their cloth" to suit the situation !

St Marks restrictions now postponed "for operational reasons" now too....maybe they've actually peaked on inconvenience through wrecking the Island's public roads network?

    Peel next isn't it ?

  9. In going to tesco and passing Banks Circus, and passing various schools car parks during the day, there does seem to be an awful lot of slack in the system in respect of vehicles ? I understand contingencies need to be catered for but at what acceptable cost ?

There were a few who failed to get re-elected in 2016 (Gawne, Gill, Houghton, Joughin, Quirk, and Singer), but, like you say, not really people you'd think are part of a nefarious club.  The main reason 2016 felt like a big change is because a large number of the most familiar names* from the 2011 cohort simply didn't stand again or had left before the election.

*Anderson, Bell, Cannell, Corkish, Cretney, Crookall, Karran, Shimmin, and Teare. The less well-known Hall and Rodan also didn't stand for re-election

I'm glad I didn't use nefarious as an adjective, bit strong. Incompetent, nepotistic, incapable, repetitious, irresponsible, profligate, unaccountable would all have been OK !

  11. Since the days of Eddie Teare commercially confidential is the fallback position.... I'd like it to be less commercially confidential where and why we lost 33 million of taxpayers money in the film fund, but hey commercially confidential seemed to cover it at the time.

I've said this before, there should be a set of rules where "commercially confidential" is acceptable, and it should be on very limited and strict terms where the use of public money is concerned. It should not be a cover all when people have acted outside their remit, or made poor decisions, or money has been used in circumstances which are open to debate !

Commercially confidential is another get out of jail card instead of commercially accountable !!!

  12. There's a lot to be said to be "local" when trying to get elected !

I sincerely hope at the next election we get some new candidates because boy do we need them ! I fear however that the club will try and get its cast out members back into the fold.

I have yet to hear a manx politician who understands that Government don't have any money, it belongs to other people and is a finite resource. I hear grandiose schemes for the future but the present is a complete mess with so many failures one after another and no semblance of accountability to taxpayers anywhere !

Covid is a great excuse for more to be quietly hidden from view !

  13. The old boys club will carry on wasting your money until it runs out !

We need politicos who will challenge Government at every turn and ask the questions in public they don't want to answer !

None of the candidates, apart from perhaps Clanton, were particularly radical though, so I don't know if that conclusion necessarily follows. You're also neglecting more than a few factors such as personal impression of the candidates and whether people actually have faith in them to stick to or carry out their promises.

Taking Josem as an example, more than a few of us here described ourselves as being put off by his campaign style and personality, with one member of the Douglas South electorate describing him as coming across as 'oily', which is probably pretty fair. That's going to have an effect.

Then you have Clanton, whose campaign page has this as main image:

I mean, really? Expecting someone to put their faith in someone who has seemingly gone out of their way to present himself as a buffoon is a big ask.

It worked for a number of them for years !!

  15. Like many things on the island we need a decent bus service, but it needs to be a service using vehicles and operating methods we can afford !

The toy trains need to be gently hived off into the enthusiasts sector. We seem to have these profligate high ranking CS employees in almost all government areas, here, the airport, DOI etc etc and the trail of spending they leave behind is unsustainable. I have said it before the skill set required to run a sleek fit business is entirely different to the skill set required to have a never ending cheque book to solve every problem !

  16. It's my understanding the airport in management and industrial relations terms is in a terrible mess !

Where do we find such incompetents in senior positions time and time again in all areas of island service provision ?

But they aren’t government jobs, are they?

The government own it,  but don’t run it.

...but probably have to pick up the tab as it can't be allowed to be in the financial mire can it ? !

I wonder who has bought the current lot off us? I’m sure they must have an environmental policy too?

Maybe also a strong fiscal policy too !
