  4. Er, Steve Rodan became an MHK in 1995 when Edgar Mann decided to jump into LegCo (again). By then Charlie had already been president for five years. He had the position from 1990 to 2000. Agreed, my error. But the fact remains that the post was specially created to accommodate Charlie after he was deposed from his Tynwald seat. Prior to that, it didn't exist. Yes it did. It was the Lieutenant Governor on an ex officio basis. Remember, he was also writing the island's budgets right through to the sixties. All this nonsense we hear about the Isle of Man losing power to the UK is so woefully inaccurate.
  5. Remember when H&B cut their prices? http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/cheaper-manx-beer-cheers-1-1787246 They sold no more beer but put a lot less cash in the tills. Demand for beer is not particularly elastic. The Bath and Bottle is often rammed with young, impressionable people who spend a fortune on their drink. The brewery doesn't even sell its own beer in its Artisan place on Victoria Street. But it seems to be doing quite well there, in spite of charging a lot more for inferior imported stuff.
  6. I bet his payslip has IOM Government written all over it. Unless IOMG is running an off balance sheet set of books....nothing would surprise me. He has gone/is going now. He and the second highest-paid public sector employee have been replaced with one person http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/business/new-boss-of-financial-regulator-to-come-to-island-from-canada-1-7394430

  10. What happened? When it was Manx Line, both services stopped making money. The Steam Packet got rid of its older vessels to save money. Eventually, the operations merged because there wasn't enough trade to justify competiting companies on the routes (and that's when there were a lot more tourists coming to the island than there are now). The Steam Packet's finances never really recovered and later it was bought by Sea Containers (and in turn other foreign companies that raised huge, unrealistic debts on the basis of the user agreement). When Mezeron tried to get a grip on the freight market a couple of years ago, the Steam Packet gave sweeter deals to some freight customers and had to cut costs elsewhere. So it ditched the Snaefell fast craft. Mezeron gave up after a couple of months. But by then the deal had been done. No more Snaefell. We were left with just two vessels to cover all routes, which has made the company even more vulnerable to disruption as the boats failed for various reasons (bow thrusters etc) since.

  13. If there were a squirrel outside Tynwald, that would be news. http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/squirrel-man-in-court-1-1753071 But remember Tim's most important contribution to Manx politics? http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/is-mhk-s-squirrel-idea-nuts-1-1788589
  14. It would make much more sense to have a Tesco Express in Onchan, where the population is about 9,100 and through which thousands of people drive every day, than Castletown, which has a population of 3,100 and which is the only town or village in the island that has a bypass.
  15. Mr Jessopp's own "news service" bit the dust a long time ago http://www.manxforums.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33363-manx-herald/ I wonder if his views about the establishment have changed since he took office?
