  1. If you're into Facebook, Twitter, blogging, podcasting and other social media, there are a couple of meetups tomorrow you might be interested in: 12:30 Paprazzi: IOM Third Thursday social media club: http://strivepr.com/2009/03/09/thirdthursday-19-march-2009/ 18:00 Claremont: Podcasting event organised by BCS: http://www.bcs.org.im/index.php/2009/03/po...y-and-practice/ If you're interested in social media, be it for work or for pleasure, pop in, I'm going to be at both events Owen -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  2. Been thinking about getting me one of these, they're currently $399 from the Android Developer store: http://android.brightstarcorp.com/ I wonder if I can get myself an MT iPhone tariff without having an iPhone. I'll need some sort of contact with a bit more than the free 1Mb my standard contract gives me!
  3. Seems like the sort of thing I would expect from my connection Owen p.s. didn't bother closing down any of my IM/Twitter clients and other bits and bobs that use my connection
  4. If you don't manage it, PM me .. I'm Douglas based, so can run down, pick one up, scan and email it to you (then mail you the original). You could Paypal me the funds too Regards Owen -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  5. Depends on how much work you're expecting the site to do. If it's just a few pages you want to content manage easily and want a bunch of plugins you can throw in when you're bothered, WordPress can be a good option. Here are a few examples where I've used WordPress: http://limo.im http://rentmalta.eu (both those were knocked up in a weekend for a couple of mates) here's something a bit more "ornate": http://manxvoice.com/ (Still building some reasonable content on that before taking it mainstream) WordPress is really a blogging platform, but you can easily adapt it as a CMS without the complexity of both Joomla and Drupal. There's a great post here: http://www.devlounge.net/publishing/things...dpress-as-a-cms (worth reading the comments following the post too). Let me know if you're interested in WP, I can point you at a bunch of other example and resources

  8. I went to the one on Buck's Road recently (The King and I) and we had a great time. Got a babysitter and took the missus out for a meal alone which we hadn't done in ages. The food was tasty and the restaurant owner was polite and happy to spend time chatting with us. We planned to go back and try more things off the menu, but haven't got round to it yet. Worth a try -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online

  10. OK, they don't fly to the Island, but still interesting: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5298332.stm -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  11. Hmm .. tempted to take the clown loaches off you, but I fear my water may be a bit too hard for them. They're great fish to have though, so would recommend them to anyone with tropical fish. They can grow quite large though: http://www.loaches.com/species-index/clown...ia-macracanthus -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  12. Have you considered using something like this? http://www.centova.com/pages/cast/
  13. Make sure you get the right memory too. There's a couple of different types and speed options. When I want to make sure I usually look up the laptop on: http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.aspx .. just to make sure I get the right type -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  14. Recently flew to Leeds on one of Manx2's craft and it was a pretty smooth journey. The planes are pretty small, so I must imagine they don't do too well in bad weather, but we had a reasonable amount of wind and didn't have any problems at all. It's pretty intimate .. this was the view from my seat: Quite enjoyed it actually. -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online

  16. Seconded, great app. Thirded, use it all the time. -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  17. Ah .. the power of the Forums! .. I just got an email and the problem has now been fixed. @pjs3232 .. if that was you, thanks for the support. As you can see from my ticket history a ticket was in fact raised and support staff said there was no problem from their end. When I replied with more technical details I was even sent a screenshot to prove that the website you were hosting was in fact visible from your premises. I think it's healthy that you monitor media/internet for references to your company, it's a good way to keep your finger on the pulse of public perception. Do you monitor other online channels? (Twitter, Facebook etc?) -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  18. Erm .. I feel like the odd one out here .. but I haven't had any probs in the last couple of days. Downloaded a "Linux distro" just as a test and was hitting around 300Kb/s (according to uTorrent), which sounds OK I guess Updated: I'm on Wimanx btw, so maybe that's why I'm not experiencing the same problems -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  19. I'm hosting http://www.bcs.org.im there .. mainly because we felt it's a local club so should be supporting a local hosting company. I've needed support from them three times. Once I was being totally thick and they pointed me in the right direction. The second instance they took some time in responding and I solved the problem before they eventually got back to me. The last issue was one I had last week with mail.bcs.org.im not actually working althought my (external) DNS entries were correct. I suspect there's a problem at their end but it still hasn't been resolved. Haven't pursued is though, as it's just an alias for mail.netcetera.co.uk, so I'm just using that. What sort of issue are you having? Maybe I can help Owen -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  20. Heh .. So they reckon the best way to keep it clear is to put together a press release asking people NOT to go. Doesn't that make you want to pop down and see what it's all about? -------------------- My Tech Blog - ManxFriends Profile - Catch me on Twitter Here's what's going on in the Manx Blogosphere Manx Online
  21. I think it's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security when thinking about the current recession. A small economy like the Isle of Man tends to be "padded" from the primary effects of the recession because of it's size. We've had some problems already, but they're nowhere on the scale that the UK is experiencing. It also takes longer to impact us but the impact will come. Albert .. I like the way you've linked house prices to unemployment; their indirectly related, and I wouldn't be surprised if your predications came true. Speaking about property prices, there's a talk coming up organised by the Junior Chamber of Commerce about property: More here: http://www.thebestof.co.uk/local/the-isle-...property-market
  22. Ah yes .. found it under R http://www.douglas.gov.im/services.asp?ID=2997
  23. Anyone know if there are any tree collections in Douglas?
  24. Just wanted to wish you guys (and gals of course) a good one! Everyone found their Christmas spirit?
  25. If you're looking at rates for phone calls, check out http://www.voipcheap.com/en/calling-rates.html Example, calls to Malta, your site charges 9p per minute, VoipCheap charges 3.4p per minute Worth nothing that most services charge different prices based on destination, so what's cheapest for one country may not be ther cheapest for another, but VoipCheap has been saved us hundreds of quid!
