  1. Agreed it can be a problem here at roundabouts. To be honest Ive never really seen anything like the confusion which reigns at gthe Island's busier roundabouts. As to your suggestion while I dont discount it it may be more cost efficient and certainly much better for the IOM if the authorities insisted all driving tuition and testing took place in the British mainland. Preferably in a busy city. At least then, given everyone would have some decent experience, we might stand a fighting chance of persuading people to negotiate those roundabout things with confidence. Horses for courses
  2. Oh the irony. Give us a clue? Are you being serious? You know to give way to the right at a roundabout yeah?
  3. Mine has been amazingly bad since mid TT, I know there have been a few items stuck in the post in Wednesday from across and they still haven't arrived (I have tracking numbers though!) and also stuff from around the same kind of time sent from Europe. In fact the only post I've been getting has been from the island and even then on Saturday I got something that had been sent recorded on Wednesday! That's an average speed of 0.1 miles per hour. Maybe they're censoring it...
  4. Er... I drove that road today and I'm with dilligaf, didn't see what you saw Burt
  5. I went to eurocycles and the specialized sirrus seemed to suit my needs. Salesman very helpful. Probably going to buy it next week... Only thing is - any classifieds (with owt in!) that I can look at first? I haven't been able to find any.
  6. Have I got the right place? Duck street is the road from ballabeg to ballasalla, right? Anyway, got me a nice new signature to prevent this sort of thing in future -----------------------\/
  7. Duck street was closed? I must have been blind cause I'm sure i've driven it pretty much every day this fortnight
  8. Fingers crossed. Yes and we could all just injject Prozac into our eyeballs and drive around at 25mph wearing trilby hats. We have great roads why should they be restricted to bike riders and rally drivers who we pay to come here and do stuff that we would get arrested for? Great roads......are you mad. We have some of the worst roads in Europe That is UTTER nonsense if you are a driver. If what you want from a road is utter uniformity, a surface glass-smooth, and mile long stretches as straight as tom cruise is bent then yeah, we have crappy roads. But for a proper dr
  9. Cheers, I'll pop along to one of those fairly soon. Also bloody hell, put FAR too much detail in that OP, thank god for the edit function now I've sobered up
  10. These speed limits are fucking evil, thank christ they're only temporary. The mad dash on the straight to ballabeg was already starting to be my welcome home. And anyone who thinks that there should be an island-wide speed limit of less than the speed of sound is a luddite.
  11. Would anyone here like a hopeless project (me) to get into shape? If not - does anyone know someone who woulld? I really am a 99-th percentile kind of unfit person. I'd love to meet someone who for whatever reason would bring it on themselves to help me out. This OP is written from the perspective of getting me cycling, but I am very open minded and anything that someone who wants to tkae me on suggests, I am willing to try. I guess I just need to find that person, an I'm under no illusions that it ain't going to be easy. Of course, I am well willing to meet them in the pub or whatever
  12. Thanks all - you've all been helpful, apart from Albert who's just been amusing Do you think any of them will let me do "road tests"? I am this clueless about bike shopping. It'd be nice if I could have a play on something for a mile or so, but I also recognise that there are a gazillion models of bikes and this may not be possible. I probably knew more about this when I was five
  13. I am grossly overweight and have decided I am going to take up pedal cycling. Can anyone recommend a bike shop with staff who will be able to advise me on what to get? Ideally said staff would be enthusiastic about cycling, but not snobby about it either (as I guess I'm going to be getting the 4x4 skoda of bikes). Bouns question for cyclists: Since I live in Ballabeg, the southern 100 course seems an ideal course for a beginner cyclist to ride, given that there is not much in the way of hills, and if you ride it anti-clockwise then for 95% of the length, cars approaching from behind can se
  14. xylitol is a real danger to dogs, eating a pack of chewing gum can be enough. some spilled antifreeze will do it too - they love the stuff. I hope there is no sick fucker out poisoing dogs, my faith in humanity is such that while that does happen sometimes I am sure this is inadvertant. Sorry for your freind's loss.
  15. There are really great sausage rolls done by manx pies to go, you can get em in shoprite
  16. Monkey Boy if it helps, I will provide you with a data point I came to the island in part cause of the tax cap*. Ironically I don't earn anything like enough for it to affect me one way or the other, but I like the idea of a system that treats wealth creators with respect. Also be aware that IOM is one of very few places that taxes worldwide income. *I also came cause most people are very friendly, especially compared to the pricks in London, and cause I like motorsport and roads without speed limits.
  17. I don't really see how taking less money off someone can be called subsidy
  18. Rather enthusiastically, but not often while making gestures regarding female body parts or happy clapping, why do you ask?
  19. As I explained already, it doesn't really matter. Greggs is going to be buying commodity type stuff - and consequently there's one price globally, to the first approximation. Manx businesses can already sell their meat or flour or whatever worldwide if they want to. They don't need local buyers. In the world you want where everyone buys locally, they wouldn't be able to export. Everyone would be a heckuva lot worse off. I don't want a world where everyone buys locally, and I didn't say I did. I was responding to the question on why a massive chain opening on the island squeezing out

It's a few years now since I was last at a Greggs, but if they still do the pepperoni pizza on a slice of bread thing, I'll be there!
  21. I have no problems with gluten but as a matter of course prefer gluten free sausages as ceteris paribus they are more meaty. Take a look at Paul Rankin's sausages, they're avaliable in both Tesco and Shoprite.
  22. Woke up late. Went on internet. Would have loved to stand for election as I'd be the best politican ever, but not elgible to stand yet due to only being in country since Feb. Don't have binoculars. Consequently, above helpful suggestions were of little use. Drove to Port Erin. Wanderd up to Milners Tower. Made some phone calls up there. Wandered back down from Milners Tower. Drove to Castletown co-op and bought stuff to eat for next 24 hours (was after 6pm by this point so not much open) and plenty of beer. Started driving home, but then remembered I needed to go and get some passport-style ph
