It certainly does get stranger. I assume it’s inadvertent on his part, but I can’t help but think he’s in essence advocating cronyism here: pick the people that are on your side rather than the best squad. It’s bizarre

Or by including Hooper and Edge, silence two of the most vocal critics of the last Government.

So are you saying you never spoke to Manx radio on this topic this week.  Or did you and you are lying?

He might mean that he answered a question on FB and Manx Radio have done a story around that?

He should have taken the PO, tried to do a good job, show he can control budgets, and at the same times understands the GMP. At present it’s all about Rob Callister, Rob Callister and Rob Callister. The chances are at least one of the new COMIN members are not going to last 18 months. My moneys on Laurie Hooper getting binned. If he had played ball, he may have been a member of the club. What could have been ……….

Quite. We have all felt at times that others have been promoted when it should have been us. But you just have to remain quiet and professional, no matter how angry you are inside, continue doing good work and your own turn will come.

Mrs Poole-Wilson will also deputise for the Chief Minister should he be unavailable.
Daphne Cain MHK will chair the Climate Change Transformation Board and Chris Thomas MHK will chair a new Housing and Community Board.
The Chief Minister continued: “I have consulted with members of Tynwald in recent days, listening to their views, ideas and suggestions.  I want to draw on the collective will of every member of Tynwald and work together to improve the lives of the people of our Island community.
“There are a number of immediate challenges we face, such as energy pricing and the COVID-19 pandemic as we enter the winter months.  But we must also focus on the longer term.  With my Tynwald colleagues, we have already started work on developing a five year Island Plan to deliver a better future for all.”
Departmental memberships and appointments to statutory boards will be announced in due course.

don't forget he has to fill some of the most difficult positions as well as ministers , government can't function without a chair of the planning committee chair of the Civil service commission  , chair of OFT ,and all the areas most members will not wish to be associated with  because of the workload , everybody wants to me a minister !

Alf't task is just beginning , and now there all getting paid the same irrespective of being in a department  or causing trouble from the back benches ,its become even more difficult ,

some are sulking and just want to cause trouble and fill keys and Tynwald question papers , without doing anything meaningful for the good of th isle of Man

Cor blimey, can’t he just announce his Cabinet like the PM does (or rather one by one!). That’s what we are interested in. The junior posts barely make the news 🤷‍♂️

I was just thinking earlier that if he doesn't announce his ministers etc by tomorrow (Friday) morning, then perhaps people aren't as willing/happy to work with him as claimed.

Could be a good sign? They are not prepared to be walked over and putting forward their own vision for the department (and Government).

Maybe, though I'm not sure what Cannan did get.  Poor financial governance just continued on in the old way - maybe that's what he wanted.  As for Thomas we know that the assurances he got proved to be useless - he was sacked for exercising them.

Of course one thing that we don't know is what promises Cannan has made for votes (including promising positions) and whether he will be able to fulfil them.

Clare Barber said in her proposal speach that it was a clean campaign and no horse trading had gone on with offers….

Do you think the past decade has proved that?  How much power to change things have Departmental Members actually shown over that time?  At best they seem to be just repeating whatever the thinking among the civil servants in the Department was. In that their main function has been to illustrate how ill-informed and incompetent many of those civil servants are.

Yes, I do. I believe they do have an impact, though it comes down to the individual. I know of cases.

But we obviously not here about these. And change is often managed quietly.

Let's see any fool do it then

More effective to be ”in” like a Deparmental member I would say, than sitting outside.

Then you may see the problems first hand and have a better chance of improving things.

Politicians are there to hold government account - it was the very role of the House of Keys when the Governor ruled the roost

What did they do the rest of the week?

    Probably had other jobs.

Now it is paid to be full time. I expect my representatives to be more constructive. Any fool can hold the Government to account.

As much as I like CT and have chatted to him on many occasions, he is irritating me with this positively child like behaviour. He sounds like he isn’t getting his own way, so stamps his feet in fit of pique.

Perhaps, for him, if he would be appointed Chair of OFT. This will do two things, make him buck up his ideas and pull his fingers out and deal with the issues (Manx Gas). Will hopefully give him a role to redeem himself, if he screws up then like Quirkio and Perkins before, it will be Cherio, Cherio, Cherio, Cherio, Cheeerio.

Possibly having also to sit on the rear bench in HoK Chamber and not getting enough support to stand for CM (if that was his intention).

Hope he snaps out of his sulk as we need all politicians contributing at this time and no sitting on their backsides for 5 years ”holding the Government to account”. It does not need to be one or the other.

but the whole vote and the way the options were presented in hindsight feels like a fix.

    How do you mean?

Agree more than two candidates would have been better, but if noone was willing to stand or could get a nomination/seconder….

  13. 9 minutes ago, 2112 said:

There were lots of hustings open to the public, radio debates etc. This wasn’t sufficient for CT, he wanted the 2 candidates to present statements to the Keys, then an opportunity for debate prior to the vote. I think by now the GMP are throughly fucked off with hearing about it. I just want them to get on with things, let’s stop the navel gazing.

Agree with what you say and I thought the Monday evening husting should have been enough for CT. Changes have been made this time, driven by CT himself I think.

Wannaburgh could have put CT forward to be CM - why didn’t he? Would CT have had the support if he was nominated? I can understand his view that he wanted a debate prior to the election, in the chamber - presumably the thinking being, it was recorded in Hansard. If debated and a newly elected CM doesn’t act by their manifesto commitments, could it be used as a form of blackmail? Evidence from a debate?

Wan’t there sonething on Monday evening for MHKs. JW chaired it.

There are eight Ministers required but in reality at least two departments, possibly more, can be filled by MHK's whose only quality is loyalty to the CM. i.e. Home Affairs and Food & AG

Treasury, Health, DOI and Education require a strong hand and a bit of knowledge and ability but Enterprise and Policy & Reform are probably departments that are effective with somebody decent in charge, but if they don't would bumble along in offensively.

That really only needs the CM looking for 6 MHKs with the ability to run a department but could get away with 4 with the other 4 just yes persons. Or am I being harsh?

Good summary. I think the Enterprise role is very important and with someone strong and outward looking in place they could actually have a really strong impact.

    You've missed off Crookall

Doubt you'll see Christian or Caine in a Cannan government

Maybe not 🤪 I don’t know how he thinks (or if he is spiteful) but this would me my choice. Somewhat influenced by the most vocal in the last admin given responsibility to drive change and improvments.

Now for the next fun game, who will Alf pick to be the Minister of..

    Cabinet Office

Ok, I’ll take the bait. Remember I only have 23 options (assuming I can still use the Speaker and Deputy Speaker) and have ruled out using MLCs to make it more straight forward. Also, confess to not knowing much about the new intake, so not utilised, but will bring them in at my first reshuffle 🤪

    DOI: Julie Edge

    DEFA: Rob Callister

    DFE: Daphne Cain

    DHSC: Claire Christian

    DESC: Kate Lord-Brennan

    Treasury: Lawrie Hooper

    DHA: Clare Barber

    Cabinet Office: Jane Poole-Wilson

Astounds me how many people think infidelity isn’t a big deal to be honest.

Married or not, cheating on someone behind their back is about as low as it gets.  If you don’t love someone or are being drawn in another direction then at least have the balls to tell the person whose life you are about to destroy.

and for the record I have never cheated on anyone or been cheated on so have no personal axe to grind.  I am just a decent bloke with morals.

I guess we don’t know if there is any truth at all in this yet. If it was confirmed then people may react differently.

I am surprised the Media are not camping outside HQ Headquarters 🤷‍♂️
