  1. Hi! I am a random guy from Sweden that might to move to isle of man with some friends in the future😀 I was just wondering as the title says, What Towns / areas in isle of man are not recommended to live in / go to & what areas are considered more Rich / Safe? 🤔
  2. I understand snakes aren't native to the island but some may have been introduced from England. Has anyone seen any or heard of any reports of them in the wild, Grass snakes or adders ? Also interested to hear if there are any local herpers and if it's a worthwhile hobby on the Island.
  3. Theres an interesting law I came across today. One of my clients came to me this week asking for fixed fees on conveyancing for a house they're buying here to live in (since we have a shortage of people skilled in their field). It turns out, that as they already own an overseas property, we have a law in place that requires solicitors to charge an extra £1,500 for conveyancing. So who benefits more from that , Government in taxation , or lawyers in getting more for less (since it sure as shit isn't people moving here from across).
  4. Heard John Shimmin DED Minister being interviewed on MR on yesterday morning's Mandate - he talked about exploiting local gas deposits - listen back on playagain at about 12:09mins into the recording http://www.manxradio.com/audiovault/MandateTHURS.mp3 will it be straight drilling or fracking under Ramsey ! No doubt the experts can tell us. Just wonder if we we be self sufficient in gas Is there any additional follow up on this anywhere else??? thanks OaP
  5. Seen this website pop up recently on Facebook, including their little mascot too. Thoughts?
  6. Manx woman to stand for Douglas Central http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/ann-wants-to-become-an-mhk-1-8024264
  7. Incoming Treasury Minister Chris Thomas has made an extensive post on his Facebook page regarding the scope of the 'Lisvane Review' Lord Lisvane has been asked to: • examine the functions of the branches of Tynwald • assess their efficacy • consider the scrutiny structure required by the parliament • recommend any options for reform https://www.facebook.com/ChrisThomasIOM/photos/a.408460149261404.1073741838.201555126618575/971787096262037/?type=3&theater Do MFers have any recommendations on options for reform, ideally ones that don't involve the immediate hanging of most MLCs?
  8. Carl Parker, an independent candidate for Arbory, Castletown and Malew. Isle of Man General Election, 2016 http://carlparker.im https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1sJnQC4kzA
  9. Ray Harmer has launched his 2016 manifesto https://rayharmer.im/2016/07/02/election-2016/
  10. I'm sorry but it's just not good enough Just how are voters supposed to get excited about the general election & obtain an idea of the potential government coming when - less that 2 weeks before the election - candidates haven't even published their manifestos? There has to be a different way, especially as Lisvane has stated the electorate must be involved in deliberation on policy issues Myself, I favour a small policy unit attached to the cabinet office to assess voter opinion on policy issues and make recommendations for the 'programme for government' Other ideas anyone?
  11. Who has the most interesting, most feasible, most genuinely packed with good, new ideas? Carl Parker has a very colourful website with wizzy manifesto options, and video with him talking to a nice looking women who appears to believe everything he says Don't think she's a replicant Anyway, anyone seen anything with some original thought in it? I look forward to reading those from Scampi & Chris Thomas particularly
  12. We all want greater sovereignty for our island Should we seek to become a part of a more federal UK with a say in it's policy issues - or independent of the UK & more closely aligned with our Gaelic cousins in Scotland & Ireland?
  13. Disappointed, the government is having to advertise again for a development partner http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/isle-of-man-news/blow-for-government-as-it-has-to-advertise-again-for-a-developer-in-central-douglas-1-7890230 Personally I'd put Murray Lambden in charge of greening all the open space around Lord St and along the prom Put in a commuter tram way & start building liner docking facilities

  17. are those that have the responsibility 100% happy that the sea wall along the Douglas promenade by the War Memorial is structurally sound enough to continue withstanding storm seas as we've been having recently? Or will it be a case of The Soldier is here today, and gone tomorrow? Should it / is it being protected? pictures please...
  19. der...am thinking perhaps I was asleep when the visit was announced I now read from the Govt Press Release dated today 12 April that "this week welcomed His Excellency Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, on a three-day visit to the Island". and I hear on MR Allan Bell saying he wrote and invited him in February and received a quick reply. But I don't recall previously reading or hearing in advance as to when he was in fact due to visit - did I miss this? Please Forum Members let me know what and when you knew of the visit. thanks OaP http://www.gov.im/lib/news/cso/chiefministerwel23.xml
  20. From Manx Radio Tough decisions for Island's chief constable Hey Gary, I'll give you a decision that will be piss easy. Get rid of coppers that lie and are shit at their job, the bad apples in an otherwise ok force. You know who they are. The good guys don't want them (erm, I don't think so anyway), I'm sure you don't want them and most importantly the decent Manx public don't want them (although I'm sure there are a few 'big wigs' that find the occasional bent copper quite handy). You know who these guys are. Grow some and get rid of them. Save the taxpayer the salary, the whopping eventual pay-off and pension too. And to boot have a decent Isle of Man Constabulary that we can all be proud of.

  24. A large number of IOM residents and also businesses involved in financial services have been 'ordered' by the IOM High Court to assist the US Securities and Exchange Commission (the SEC) by answering questions put to them by US lawyers.....all looks as though its nothing to worry about as Deemster Doyle says we will just be doing our bit to help....but what's going to happen if one or more of the people / businesses providing "assistance" later discover they have been implicated in Wire Fraud or some other US offence and get lifted to face trial in the USA? I don't see that Deemster Doyle has negotiated any immunity from prosecution in return for the 'assistance' the locals are giving...how worried do you think the locally based Respondents should be? http://www.gov.im/lib/news/courtservice/0024judgmentsumm.xml http://www.gov.im/lib/docs/courtservice/PressRelease/ord120024judgmentsummary.pdf http://www.judgments.im/content/J1238.htm
