ROARING SUCCESS AT EDINBURGH FESTIVAL!!!!* * * * * FIVE STAR (TOP RATING) EDINBURGH REPORTER* * * * EDINBURGH HERALD* * * * THREE WEEKS PICK OF THE FRINGE - MERVYN STUTTER REVIEW Richard Digance is a rare performer in that he's respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed Richard since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs. His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. He is included in The Virgin Anthology of Songwriters for his important contribution to British comedy songwriting. Richard Digance is also a world-acclaimed poet. His poetry is published around the world, from The University of British Columbia, Canadian syllabus for English; Fearndon Teaching Aids, Illionois, USA, The Oxford University Anthology of Poetry, The West Indies Schools syllabus and more recently in Australia, Swaziland and in Cape Town, South Africa as part of English First Additional Language Grade 8 Reader. He has survived all trends with his two hour one-man show, an entertainer who many younger comedians, including Ross Noble, claim as one of their major influences. On his own ITV Saturday-night show Richard has played guitar with Queen's Brian May, The Moody Blues, Status Quo, Chris deBurgh, Juan Martin, Marc Cohn and Elkie Brooks.
  7. Stuart Fleming & John Hywel Morris PRS for Music, Kirsty Geoghegan (Airstate/Valentine Music) and Ruth Keggin (IOM PRS for Music Member) Venue: @Kensington Kensington Road Youth Arts Centre Doors Open: 19:00:00 Free Tickets from this link: http://tinyurl.com/PRS-for-Music-GuitarFest-2014 Music Industry Seminar to kick off IOM GuitarFest 2014 Ever wanted to know how to make money from music? Here’s your chance. IOM GuitarFest 2014 launches this year with a talk from leading UK music industry experts at Kensington Road Youth Arts Centre on Thursday 2nd October 2014 at 7pm. PRS for Music, the UK's leading royalty collecting society, has kindly offered to host the opening event entitled: “Rights and Royalties: How songwriters can make a living from their music”. The talk will include an open and informal Q&A session with the audience and brief performances by guest musicians. The industry panel includes two senior representatives from PRS for Music. Stuart Fleming is senior manager for membership development in Scotland & Northern Ireland and manages PRS for Music’s ongoing education programme across both countries. Stuart will be joined by John Hywel Morris who is senior manager for membership development at PRS for Music in Wales. John has worked at PRS for Music for nineteen years, serving Welsh PRS and MCPS members. He has had to deal with all sorts of member and licensing issues in his career and is well placed to offer the best kind of advice to composers, publishing companies and musicians alike. Local singer and musician Ruth Keggin will join the panel to offer her perspective on writing, publishing, recording and touring music since starting out on her solo career in 2012. Also speaking is Kirsty Geoghegan from Airstate, an independent UK music publishing company that specialises in maximising performing rights royalties for music used within broadcast media. Kirsty also represents UK music publisher Valentine Music, which licenses and publishes a diverse range of artists from musical genres including jazz and orchestral music. Jonno Gollow, creator and promoter of IOM GuitarFest said: “I’m thrilled to welcome the PRS for Music team and other industry guests for this opening GuitarFest event. Music rights and royalties are a hugely important part of the music industry. For many musicians, whose focus is predominantly on their art, I know that area must be quite daunting. Songwriters and composers have to recognise the “business” end of “showbusiness” so that the music they create can really work for them.” Ruth Keggin said: “Working with PRS has been invaluable for me. I’ve learnt so much from them in the process of making a career in music. Rights, royalties, publishing, licensing; these things are essential for musicians to know about, whether you use the information now or later in your career.” The evening will take the shape of an informal discussion on songwriting, different income streams for musicians and an informal Q&A with the audience to answer their questions. The event is supported by PRS for Music, GuitarFest, Arts Council, and Island of Culture. The talk begins at 7pm and is free of charge. This will be followed by an informal networking opportunity at the Prospect pub, hosted by PRS for Music, from 9pm onwards. GuitarFest is a JonnoPromotions event supported by Island of Culture, Arts Council, Culture Vannin and Aston International Limited to all of whom, many thanks. GuitarFest design by Martyn Cain.

  18. "There are only two people in art that matter. There's the creative individual and the person experiencing it. Everything else is an artificial filter. This a way for me to share my work with you without any filters whatsoever." - Otis Gibbs Otis Gibbs is a man in search of an honest experience. Gibbs is often referred to as a folk artist, but that is a simplistic way to describe a man who has planted over 7,000 trees, slept in hobo jungles, walked with nomadic shepherds in Romania, was a fifth grade yo-yo champion and once wrestled a bear (and lost). Otis has played countless, theatres, festivals, bars and house concerts and has managed to carve out a living, while remaining happily independent. Much of his work concentrates on the world ignored by pop culture. Sometimes forgotten, obsolete, or simply marginalized, it is a world that doesn’t fit into a twenty-second sound bite, or talking point. Otis has spent the last fifteen years traveling across America and abroad documenting this world, and has a story to share about each stop along the way. Some videos here http://tinyurl.com/Otis-Gibbs-JonnoPromo-YouTube "when it comes to song craft and true emotion, Gibbs is up there with the best of them ... an excellent songwriter and singer – with a voice like honeyed bourbon – he is a consummate showman in the old-fashioned sense of the word. His between song patter is as much part of the show as the tunes: Gibbs gives his music context by sharing his tales of growing up, the working life and the loves and losses inherent in life ... Gibbs knows how to pierce to the heart" James Meredith http://www.culturenorthernireland.org/ "Harder Than Hammered Hell" is Otis Gibbs’ sixth album. It’s also the fourth release by Wanamaker Recording Company, the East Nashville based independent label he started in 2008 with long time partner Amy Lashley. The album title was inspired by experiences Otis had when he worked as a tree-planter in Indiana. Much of what he learned came from a seventy-year-old friend/co-worker. The man would describe ground that is too hard to dig as, “harder than hammered hell.” He would also use the phrase when referring to a difficult job, or a particularly tough person. Otis found it a fitting metaphor for the difficulties of leading a creative life When asked about his approach to making records Otis replied, “I’m silly enough to believe that I’m the world’s foremost authority on what an Otis Gibbs record should sound like. I tend to enjoy stripped down arrangements that highlight the song and the vocal.” There is a feeling of strength and perseverance that resonates throughout his work and his lyrics often speaks of accepting the harsh realities of life without giving into them. Below are some of the lyrics from tracks on "Harder Than Hammered Hell" “Somewhere outside the vacant world two fools stare fate in the eye, singing oh you’ll never take us alive.” -Broke And Restless “When the suffering world is about to uncurl and reaches up and under your skin, you might sit there alone, but you’re about to be thrown into a box you never could fit in, we were made to break.” - Made To Break Don’t Worry Kid - recalls childhood feelings of not fitting in. “I wish that more people would be honest with kids and let them know that there’s nothing wrong with feeling different. Any sane person would feel out of place in a society that idolizes celebrities and trash culture while catering to short attention spans. The good news is they’re not alone and it does get better.” “Don’t worry kid you know it’s gonna get better than this there’s nothing wrong with you that you can’t work out we’re all filled with doubt, don’t worry kid.” - Don’t Worry Kid Big Whiskers was inspired by a childhood memory. In 1966, the World Record Flathead Catfish (79lb 8oz) was caught out of White River near Gibbs’ childhood home. Otis fished that same river countless times and heard many stories of huge catfish spotted there. Otis asked his friend, Adam Carroll to help him finish a song based on some of these tall tales. Gibbs and Carroll met up at a rundown hotel outside of Austin, Texas and finished the song in an afternoon. Otis currently resides in East Nashville with his partner Amy Lashley. Billy Bragg included Gibbs' song "The Peoples Day" in a list of "Top Five Songs with Something to Say", published in the Wall Street Journal. Andy Gill of the The Independent wrote that there is a "authenticity and dedication in Gibbs' delivery which is somehow cleansing in its purity". Come and see this singer songwriter who has been compared to Woody Guthrie, Steve Earle and Bruce Springsteen. 24. A Fake Comeback? Manxman John Watterson will bring his one man show ‘Fake Thackray – the life and songs of Jake Thackray’ to the Island on Sunday 29 July, 8pm at Peel's Centenary Centre. Jake Thackray’s satirical, witty, hilarious songs brought him fame and extensive TV exposure in the 60s and 70s on Esther Rantzen’s ‘That’s Life’ and he performed at the Island’s 1976 Folk Festival, and subsequently at the folk club in Douglas. Jake stopped performing in the early 90s and died in 2002. John’s tribute to Jake is full of the warmth, humour and sincerity that you would expect from a lifelong fan. He says ‘I recall going to the Falcon Cliff pub with friends and family to see Jake and we had never laughed so much. It is a privilege to be able to sing some of his wonderful songs back on ‘home ground’. I am hoping that friends from my formative years at St Thomas’ School, Ballakermeen, St Ninian’s and of course - the Dog’s Home - will pop in and say hello!’ Tickets are £10 and will shortly be available from Centenary Centre outlets and now available from http://www.eTickets.im/jp MORE ABOUT JOHN WATTERSON http://www.jonnopromotions.com/viewartist.php?aid=132
