Richard Corkill For Mlc

Recommended Posts

I think everyone is just getting a little bit melodramatic here.

While I'd certainly like to see Legco elected, you have to remember that legco are not policy makers but merely scrutinisers.

They have an important role but they cannot really undermine the democratic process.

Commonsense would suggest it's imprudent for Corkill to be elected but he still has value as an experienced politician.

2 points to remember, Don's position will come up at same time, February sitting.

Legco has equal importance, it can initiate legislation and often does, but in case of dispute it cannot prevail over Keys, but it can delay for nearly 3 years

If he had stood people would have complained that he had no chance of being elected and was only standing to recive the "pay off" that MHK's get when they loose their seat in an election. It is I believe a few months salary.

He did not really then have a lot of choice. Either be called a "coward" for not standing or labelled "greedy" if he did with little chance of regaining his seat.

Either way he would have castigated.

But if he never had a chance, and knew it. Why did he claim it was "threats" to his family? And yet now he is suddenly available for the LEGCO, what changed?

Don's seat in the Legislative Council comes vacant February 2010?

He can retire whenever if he wants (as did Leonard Singer) and the seat can be filled within a couple of meetings of the House of Keys

No need to wait until a February arrives.

No Don has said he will resign from Legco as soon as the new Chief Minister is electedl

Given all the other things the new Keys and Tynwald have to do it is likely that Singers seat on Legco will come up to be filled in February so will Donalds, so it will be two at once, one for 18 months and one for 4 years

I think applications from the public should be allowed. People put a name forward and votes are counted through the media to see who wins the contest.

Then the MHK's can decide whether to accept the winners or not as new MLC's. If not, why not?

This should defeat cronyism.

Im shocked at you Charles. That sounds suspiciously like democracy. We dont want any radical ideas destabilizing the political pig trough system.

Oh thats more like it. We dont want ordinary people deciding who should be members of Tynwald do we.

So what's the big hang up about 'February'?

Singer's seat is vacant now. He'll not be in Tynwald next Tuesday will he? His seat could be filled by end of play 19th December.

Donnie's seat is vacant when he retires, it's up to him. February? Yeah, why not. It could take that long to find a replacement Chief Minister.

February.

I am assuming of course that the present MHK's are decent representatives who believe they should take notice of public opinion. Sorry to be so stupid to think this is so.

The media should have no place in the electoral process in a democracy - other than to report or present opinions. Those opinions should be seen only as opinions and not 'votes' - no matter what statistical polling companies are used.

All representatives should be elected by the people.

This sugestion would only encourage cronyism and spin, and place the media effectively in a position to impact legislation - the central pillar of any dumbocracy.

I better get me hot water bottle & slippers & hit the sack!

Hopefully I'll wake up in the morning and forget the last few posts on this forum thing here.....

Is it really possible with his wife appealing, the case being chewed over again in public?

He would have to be very stupid and yn kiarre as feed even more so

As for February appointment of MLC's does not come up high on the agenda of a new Keys and Tynwald

Assume we get a Chief Minister earl December and Tynwald appreoves the ministerial team in late December or January February is where it will come on the agenda. After all why add two new ones in when that potentially ytakes jobs away from those who are there
