Why had the tanker been allegedly proceeding for long periods with its AIS identification switched off?

It really is hard to imagine where all this is going to end? I have always sympathised with the Palestinians and their plight, which was forced upon them by the British, but their leaders with their e

AIS (Automatic Identification System) is for when you want to be identified to someone,  whether that be other vessels when you are navigating busy shipping lanes, or your company when you are on long passages. In most cases it just makes sense to use AIS. When travelling in dangerous water where there is piracy or potential aggravation from a government, most, if not all, ships switch off the AIS.

Hmmm. So why would you switch it off in the Med in Western/EU controlled waters then...?

Because given the twattery from the States and the UK being an obident whipping boy for the States in the area, maybe they didn't want to grabbed as part of some bullshit precursor for stating a war...

Doh, too late.

I'm sure there must be many Iranian oil tankers trundling around the world's oceans but they're not all being boarded and confiscated. Nor will they all be turning their AIS off. So why this particular one then?

Because the US/UK navy doesn't have complete global coverage.

Good job the UK government has pledged to increase the size of the navy after this event (the same government that has been gutting the armed forces for decades)

Anyone that thinks America is stumbling into war by accident or incompetence is severely deluded.

Well America might not go into war through incompetence, but it always conducts them with a generous helping of it. Usually because they don't commit sufficient resource to whatever they are trying to achieve. After the Iraq experience are they ready for more of the same?

Rubbish, if they "committed" to it, they would completely decimate a nation.

But they don't want that, they want to destabilise it enough so that its "safe" enough so that contractors can repair it at great cost afterwards, but still be "dangerous" enough that they can maintain a troop presence to keep the local "government" in check.

Each time it has been text book.
