Slug & Lettuce

Recommended Posts

Although i do like apertivo - its got a nice vibe to it and its quite reasonable?

£3.90 a pint is not reasonable...

I agree, I can't afford that so you won't be seeing me in there.(yipee I hear some slugs say)

I went to the original Slug & Lettuce in Islington around 1987

Typical that we end up with a concept 20 years out of date

Mind you, most of the Next-wearing gel-haired office drones that frequent the place probably think its the absolute zietgiest

Although I am tempted to say that it is about the right timing for something in the IOM, I will ask a question. CHeeky Boy (any anyone else), if the S&L is 20 years out of date, what would make a bar a bar of today? What characteristics?

I am curious.

what would make a bar a bar of today?

Real ale and beers/lagers from around the world

No food menu or sniff of the word "gastro"

No kids

Smoking

No theme

Real open fire

No pool table

Re: Apertivo I guess i have only been there a few times and always with a big group of mates, I didnt find it WOW i just found it a nice vibe, there were private parties on with people I knew each time I was there though, so I suppose my judegement is based on that.

The best pub, The Rovers - I always have a wicked time when i go in there, and I love the people and the music.

That sounds more like 50 years out of date to me (apart from the lagers from around the world).

You reckon...sounds like heaven to me. A pub is a place to drink beer and smoke and listen to music. Simple. It is not a pool hall, it is not a cafe or a restaraunt and is is not a creche.

Here endeth the lesson.

You missed:

No music (unless there's a piano in the corner for a sing-song at the weekend).

Bitter and mild drawn from real wooden barrels.

I can see it now, Lonan3 on the old Johanna

"Roll out the Barrel".....

It would make a great black and white movie - in 4:3 of course!

I quite liked havana as it was to be honest, it did have quite alot of twats going there but there was something about it that if you were drunk enough you could forget you were on the drizzly isle of man for a few minutes and imagine being somewhere else (and yes I am fully aware of the fact that there is a boat in the morning, there are planes too!) Was in the S&L the other night and it's managed to lose any atmosphere havana used to have and just left the twats! We headed straight downstairs (which are quite slippy now they are over shined!)

I'll have you know that Johanna is not that old - and that rumour about a barrel and a B&W movie is entirely unfounded!

Sounds like we need a chain of 1950's theme pubs!
