Writing A Biography

Recommended Posts

I am interested in writing a biography, or having someone write it based on my research. Is there anyone on the Island who specialises in this sort of writing or can offer advice as to get the project started?

Cheers

For general publication or just a personal project? Do you hope to get a publisher or is it a self publication? Is for the local market, the UK market or hopefully worldwide. You need to first to decided what you want to do with the biography.

Personally, I wouldn't publish an biography unless you have made, lost and re-made millions, done something really famous (outside the Isle of Man) or it's full of kinky sex, lies, more lies, scandal, gossip, more sex and a sheep, a donkey or a goat, and a politician or two. Otherwise, people will not buy it. ;)

Thanks MCH for that!

The book would be mainly aimed at the local market but some of the stories I feel are interesting enough to warrant a far wider market, which is why I am serious about the project. It is not an autobiography.

There is certainly plenty of (substantiated) gossip, scandal and more than enough sordid sex stories and yes, there are politicians involved!!

Hi John.

..It is not an autobiography.

I appreciate that this could contain very delicate material, but even without it, the story is interesting and varied and depicts many aspects of Island life over the years. Politics and politicians are very much part of the story, but can be kept to a bare minimum if need be.

I suppose I am looking for a collaborator with writing experience.

Done most of that. Nothing with animals though - would that make my book dull?

...where men are men and sheep are really worried (especially those with the little black legs that look like stockings) ;)

I've never really cared for the stockings look as you can't see the back legs anyway once they're rammed down the front of your wellies to stop the buggers running away.

You can always use a ghost writer - the best way of doing this is through an agent. Someone may be willing to take a cut of potential profits, others require payment. Buy the writers and artists yearbook and you will find a lot of advice and who to speak to (you can probably pick up a copy in bookshops in Douglas - I did last year). It's a good book that also advises on legality, copyright etc. etc.
