[BBC News] Prices rise for Manx electricity

Recommended Posts

Yet again lumbered with that old chestnut 'rising raw fuel prices' we're used to that one. I just love the added bit of 'and continued extra charges to meet the MEA's loans deficit'. How the hell do these bunch of bollock-chops get away with it, you'd think it too funny to be true. They illegally use funds, now have to pay it back and they get someone else to cough up. Imagine telling your loan officer at the bank that you'll not be paying them back the money you borrowed for the fortnight in Majorca and the new tyres on your Escort, but John Smith three doors down will pick up the bill.

Hmm wonder if the people in the showroom will start unplugging stuff at night now or does that shops electrical bill just get winked at and elbow nudged.

....and with Gustav all but shutting down 100% of oil produciton in the Gulf I would guess that the "cost of energy" is only going to keep on rising.....

Crude is down nearly 4% today which is surprise, but it is a bank holiday in the US so trading will subdued.

Most UK utility company's have put electricity up a similar amount this month too so this time the MEA is not alone.

I imagine there's quite a few countries in the world where people that mess up on this scale are simply dragged outside and shot.

It's still totally unbelievable that the very people who brought this on all of us were essentially allowed to get away with it scot free, but as long as everyone just sits on their couch and moans instead of marching to the homes of these people, symbolic torch and pitchfork in hand, nothing will ever happen. This is an island of 80.000, many of which claim to be proud manx souls, yet again and again you allow yourself to be put over a barrel for a right royal shafting and do nothing about it - makes you wonder...

I have never got to the bottom of this. It is clear that they borrowed a large amount of money, apparently without government approval (although nobody in government seemed prepared to acknowledge responsibility for overseeing the MEA), and then spent it on what?

If the money was spent properly and wisely, then the only issue was a lack of communication. If the money was spent unwisely, then we should be told, and if it was pinched, then those responsible should have been locked up.

Which was it? Spent well, spent badly, or filched?

As I understand it, the money was spent on three capital projects:

A gas pipeline

An undersea power cable & fibre optic cable

A new power station at pulrose

The costs were more than anticipated, so the MEA circumvented the controls by applying for additional £120m of loans under a subsidiary company The Manx Cable Company.

Wiseley spent? Na, the whole thing was over-specced and under-budgeted from the beginning by the look of things, which is the biggest error about the whole affair as far as I can see. This doesn't seem to be talked about much, the main focus being how could the MEA take the unauthorised extra loans. I don't see that as a huge issue, what was the alternative, a half built power station? By that time it was too late, the work had been commissioned.

The MEA then couldn't repay, which is when the shit hit the fan. Sadly £10m allocated for wind turbines was also lost in this mess.

The knock on is far worse than most people realise too, we're not only paying out of our bills, but we're paying out of diverted government funds too.

I remember seeing an MEA board member in bar george shortly after this all came out, with a table full of cronies and bottles of champagne. I'd have quite happily shoved that bottle up.....

It doesn't make me wonder at all! As I now live off-island whenever I criticise the Manx so-called "government" all of the usual suspects crawl out of the woodwork in it's defense. This defense consists pretty much of criticising the UK government, claiming Tynwald isn't as bad as they are and that's about it. As if that then makes Tynwald a shining light - pathetic really. Unfortunately for these patriotic wankers the enormous difference between the two systems is accountability. The UK MP's are not only accountable to their electorate but also to the HOL as the highest court in the land, extremely powerful Select Committees and so forth. No such checks and balances exist in the Tynwald system. Ian Bell is an excellent case in point. He was accused of lying to Tynwald over the Mount Murray ferrago which highlighted weaknesses in his department and his governance of it (sound familiar MEA fans?) and he's still there! Not only still there but strangely holding the same portfolio. The Commissions can only report and reccommend i.e. they have no teeth at all.

Despite a seeming endless array of major capital projects that go completely out of control those on the gravy train always decide that there are no grounds for reform. Funny that. So if there are to be changes they will have to come from without so only the electorate can do this. On current evidence the words wind and pissing spring to mind here. They say you get the government you deserve. Enjoy....

Sometimes I love this Island and other times I FUCKING hate it.

Does anyone use that fibre optic cable thingy or is it just sitting there?

I'd love to do a march to the people who fucked up and are making us all pay, but how many people would join in? None I suspect, I like the Island and I'm a proud Manxman, but these fucking ass holes that run the Government need to be shot or at minimum have there hands chopped off.

Its like someone said on here before, " they would have been shot ". I think they get away with murder here, Government, MEA, MT, Manx Gas. Yet you see some Government members driving around in a 3 litre Toyota Supra........WTF.......how much is he claiming in petrol a month please!!!!!!

One thing I have agreed with someone, is that this place is really the bannana republic......bring back Hitler, he'd sort the fuckers out!!!!!!!!

I just hope I get as nice a pay rise as the MT people, another bunch of greedy CUNTS!

Oh behave you miserable cock-bag. One major cockup every few years is still a long way behind the UK government.

When you work out the relative price / population of the Island's disasters the IOM is way ahead of the UK government.

You recon?

Like I said above, what was the alternative outcome you'd want out of the MEA loans affair? People posting here calling for blood, PK doing his usual sideline kicking. Kicking who exactly? This catch all 'they' cloud?

Who fucked up? What did they do? Should we not have a power cable to the UK? Should we not have a gas pipeline? Should we not have a gas powerstation (probably). Who's fault is that, tynwald will have approved each of those capital projects, democratically. They went over-budget, and a dodgy sidestep was used to secure more cash, but should these projects been left unfinished?

Yep, it was a fuckup, they should have been budgetted better, and parts were clearly over-specified, but the government's dealt with it pretty well in hindsight. The alternatives, a large unfinished project or a black list on our country for future lending are far worse than a few quid on our bills.

I agree we should have all those things but its the way its gone about. I think I should have a big-ass television the size of the screen at the Palace Cinema, but I can't quite afford it so I'll missapropriate funds and get it. Bet I'd get some chokey time for that.

Or maybe I should rig up the Electrical Meter so it bodges the reading and gives me it cheaper, then I could afford the telly that way, bet the MEA would be right on top of me now hollering Prosecute! you can't go doing that, it's theft that! double bloody standards.
