Recommended Posts

The launch of £22 million bulk carrier Caly Manx has helped to raise the international profile of the Isle of Man Ship Registry.

The carrier was officially named at the Tsuneishi Zhoushan Shipyard, near Shanghai, by local singer and actress Samantha Barks.

Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK headed an Isle of Man Government delegation to China, supported by Trade and Industry Minister David Cretney MHK and Director of the Ship Registry Dick Welsh.

Caly Manx not caly Manx

Bring back Newsbot.

On a side issue can anyone now continually plug a commercial website by the subtle use of a .com login name and producing 'news' items?

Not ideal is it?

Why do Manx news sites always have such crappy postage stamp sized photos? They're all guilty of it.

Blame the forum software for adjusting the capital letters on thread titles, not the original poster.

You'd think IPB would be slightly more sophisticated than 'if it follows a space it's the beginning of a word' when it manhandles your capitalisation.

God bless her and all that sail in her.

Same for the ship as well.

Let's hope she doesn't go down on the Chinese...with all the Manx registered shipping incidents that have been in the news recently.

Didn't know Sam was that sort of girl.....

We don't want her ending up full of dead Chinese semen either.

...most dead Chinese seamen are apparently from Wangcun.

Word from the industry is that Sam did herself and the IOM proud. By all accounts, she was an excellent ambassador and handled the whole thing with poise, confidence and charm, not to mention a very pretty face!

So, we have a success story in terms of the shipping angle met with a success story in terms of Sam Barks, yet can't quite shift ourselves out of the Manx crab syndrome.

It seems that most people's idea of being worldy-wise and canny, actually ends up in undermining the IOM in its efforts to improve our position. Net result? We look like mealy-mouthed, nit-picking retards with no view (let alone concept) of the wider picture.

Don't worry Glad...they can't read us in China - we're blocked.

I don't worry about China, I worry about our inability to recognise our own achievements and so consolidate them for everyone's benefit.

Just to understand where 'Manx crabs' really came from is to understand what is meant; it was a metaphor from observation of a barrel of crabs where one that looked like it may be escaping was pulled back by the rest to await the fate of the barrel.

Let's put things in perspective, for what is really just a few Finbar Saunders type double-entendres. That said, we send an actress who simply obtained 'fame' on a reality TV show, who most people, as with most other reality TV stars, have long forgotten in the UK - never mind even heard of further afield - when we could have asked the like of Norman Wisdom (at one time), John Rhys-Davies or the Bee Gees. Bee Gee launches ship would get a lot more publicity - world wide. If it's that beneficial and important to the island, did anyone ask them?

Personally, I get annoyed with the over-estimation of trips like that because they create relatively few jobs, whilst in the meantime we have unemployment reaching the 1000 mark, politicians telling us everything is rosy, inflation supposedly at 0% - and this kind of thing simply demonstrating politicians are piddling about when there is a real crisis here.

Trying to fix the finance sector collapse with silly putty is not what should be happening at the moment.
