FWIW my 3G has now stopped working in IOM. Works fine in UK and Europe.

One really cool feature of the Kindle is the conversion facility. If you have lots of work documents to read then just e-mail them to your Kindle and get Amazon to convert them to a proper searchable e-book. You get two e-mail addresses with your Kindle - joe.bloggs@kindle.com and joe.bloggs@free.kindle.com. If you send it to the standard @kindle.com address you will get charged for delivery over 3G. If you send it to the @free.kindle.com address there is no charge as you will receive it over WIFI. I've used it a bit and it does a good job of converting PDF and .doc files. Saves printing reports or booting up a laptop and I've found it handy in a taxi or on a flight for catching up on stuff I'm supposed to have read. More info here.

Amazon CS said that "Currently there is no 3G coverage available for Kindle on the Isle of Man" and although "users may have connected to the 3G network, I cannot guarantee this service."

Translation - If it works, it's a fluke. So don't get used to it until there's official coverage.

Thanks for the info Bobbie Buster. Seeing as 3G comes on and downloads books when you first turn it on from the box , I reckon there is a little man here, on the Isle of Man, in a small dark room checking 3G connections from Kindles. As soon as he notices books are downloaded he has a smirk on his face whilst saying 'and you ain't getting any more for free!' and switches our kindles off, one by one. I have been using the free Wi-Fi at the libary instead and it works OK or downloading via USB from PC.

After a bit more digging I've found that the Kindle is SIM locked to AT&T and their partners. I don't believe MT or Sure are AT&T partners hence the reason why it doesn't work. Doesn't explain why it seems to work out of the box though...

Turned on my Kindle Yesterday (in Castletown) and had a really strong 3G signal that lasted. That was yesterday. Have not tried today yet. Manx or Sure?

Have you been to Italy yet and did it work there? we're heading that way shortly and it would be good to know.

Haven't been to Italy with my Kindle, but it's worked perfectly everywhere that I have been that's covered on this map. Italy seems to have 3G coverage throughout.

On some networks I've found web browsing to be unrestricted, whereas on others I was only able to reach the 'core' sites promised by Amazon (e.g. Kindle Store and Wikipedia).

Off to Northern Italy for Xmas week. Stopping off in Dijon (France) so will try there too. First stop though will be Stoke-on-Trent, but I know I can get WiFi there.

Dear Kevster, I do understand what you said but since I tried lugging 52 books around with me , and getting a bad back in the process it's easier with a Kindle! Anyway , I am inclined to have up to four books being read , reading what I like , depending on my mood, so the Kindle is just right.

Thanks for that. Very useful. I'm busy reading as fast as I can to get rid of my paper books before I start on the Kindle. First impressions are good - but my thumbs are a bit too small to reach the back and forward buttons comfortably - but that's down to me and my dwarf thumbs. :/

Try it in Landscape. Use Aaa key.

The daughter was given a kindle by her mother (who lives across). Not impressed at all.

I also found that I couldn't connect it to the home wi-fi point. I have access limited to certain MAC addresses and my AP wouldn't accept the kindles MAC - it kept saying 'invalid address'.

Disable the mac addy list, it's of limited benefit anyways.

Woot, I'm in the kindle club!

My dad got one recently and I got him some vouchers for Christmas to add more books. He's a real book fan, but has been blown away with the kindle and takes it everywhere with him.

Enjoy Slim :)
