As many have suggested before, the Castle Mona would make an excellent Governor"s residence.  It was built by a former Governor the Duke of Athol and has far more historical significance for the island than the present one.  There is still time... until next Monday (the auction date) to persuade the powers to spend a few mil ( not usually a problem to them) and save us from another ugly block of flats in the middle of the prom.

There would be far too much moaning about that.  Impossible to do.

I doubt it will just be another ugly block of flats.  It could be flats, but is it likely that any planning would allow a total demolition of the property?

Yes, another ugly block of flats, then.

Whereas a 'Palace' for the Lord of Man's representative could become a tourist attraction in itself.  Sentries outside, parades on the gardens, pipers, marching bands, appearances on the balcony waving to the adoring crowds.

No?

if you add in the palace site its got dandan written all over it...

I don't agree.

The Castle Mona site, I think, is probably a protected/listed building?   I cannot see how any development will take place there that ultimately will look much different externally to what we see now.  You've got to remember there are no takers at £1m.  Buttons.   There is a reason for that.   IF a developer thought they could flatten that site it would have sold by now.  In addition, it is not really that big a site.  The Arcade is probably protected too I assume so it's hardly like you could demolish the site anyway.

The Palace site is a big site but (a) they have no means to move that business (unless a potential developer type purchaser developed a site for them in advance as part of the deal and (b) Dandara et al have stopped building apartments because there is not enough demand.  15 years ago i agree with you but now builders are focusing on houses and housing estates.

castle mona is protected but the wings are not and its done zero to protect it over the last 10 years. 6 acres is a massive site and the auction details show the palace site is also available.....

It doesn't say it's available and doesn't form part of the auction.  It says it adjoins land effectively in common ownership.  The auctioneer will be trying to intimate any buyer might look at the rest but in reality the rest is a functioning business that would not be able to be purchased at a viable level unless they were relocating the business as part of the deal.

If Dandara had had any desire to do this it would be done already.

The property lies alongside the Palace Hotel, Casino and
cinema, which together with Castle Mona creates a site
of some 6 acres, together with a lengthy stretch of this
prime section of the sea front. This may be an
opportunity for a more substantial sea front
redevelopment.
