Does it matter really? It's a private deal in the main because they will have to come up with a huge chunk of money to purchase two sites from the Sefton.   The only people that need to be satisfied about anything is the Sefton Group.  If a deal isn't done it goes to auction anyway.

Or: Tynwald is clearly being abused by some members who are effectively using it as a retirement fund.

In the Report ‘Government Support for the Sefton Group’ there are a number of what might be called core or central propositions which if successfully challenged render the supporting explanations stan

The prom needs something like a large Weatherspoons at the Palace site along with a hotel, and the bus station area another hotel and a major retailer like John Lewis.

Areas get rejuvenated only when there are key footfall anchors in place. Once those anchors are built people are encouraged to invest in the between bits.

Look at any town centre that has been rejuvenated in the UK and elsewhere, and developments follow that pattern.

M&S is one such key anchor, another major retailer is required at the end of Castle Street, at the Sefton end.

Do not look this gift horse in the mouth.

There will not be a Wetherspoons or its ilk anywhere on IoM whilst the Cowleys/H&B have the ear of Govt.

People need to stand up against such issues, and especially our politicians need to do this.

Little wonder we are losing our youngsters.

It also mentions a 'high end' hotel and private members club. Is the private members club the carrot dangling for Tynpotwald approval? I can see automatic membership for the MHKs to sit and quaff drinks, sat down in leather armchairs whilst reading their Manx Newspapers.

The grants will be of nominal value in the entire scheme of things.  What grants can they get?

Spectrum Apartments were marketed as high end accommodation too, and looked what happened....DHSS Rental Central for what they couldn't sell. Just great if you happened to have paid full asking price for your own. The market is already saturated, Island-wide. We need facilities and attractions but the vested interests and establishment are the obstruction.

I can't even find any reference to this development company or developer anywhere. You'd think someone who has £30m to spunk on such a massive apparent white elephant would be widely known.

There's a Wild Coast Group Incorporated registered in Nova Scotia.  No idea if it's the same one.  Can't find much online evidence of "island-based Alan Rice" either, though others may know more.

Edited to add: Paul Gauthier, who seems to be the person behind that company seems to be more a nature conservationist (in Canada)  than a property developer, so there's probably no connection.

Surely a demolished Palace, rejuvenated Castle Mona and development at Middlemarch would be much better than what we have now. Even if it is a commercial failure/bad scheme. The most important thing is that the risk is private money not tax payers money.
