Islam In The Isle Of Man

How do you know that nothing got missed out, or elaborated?

Sometimes they did forget parts. If they did they mentioned it in the narration, but usually another person will have memorised it too, so they could fill in the gaps.

Surely they would have found it much easier to just write stuff down, that's how most literate people preserve information. Why didn't they just do that?

For the Qur'an they both memorised and wrote it down, but for the ahadith they just memorised and they weren't compiled into writings until a later date.

Just how phenomenal were their memories, anyway?

Some of them could listen to a lecture and then repeat it again from memory afterwards. A lot of the ahadith were preserved thanks to the powerful memories of those people.

Not very powerful then, so the whole book is hearsay. I rest my case Your Lord.

so the whole book is hearsay.

The Ahadith and the Qur'an were only narrated by Muhammad. There were several people memorising and/or writing down the hadith or ayah at any given time. It wasn't hearsay.

But you said they had phenomenal memories. This is all very confusing.

So, very inaccurate hearsay then!

I said they sometimes forgot parts. Parts of the entire lectures they memorised just by hearing them once.

Exactly, they forgot parts, so they didn't successfully memorise the lectures. That's not phenomenal. They should have just wrote everything down. That wouldn't have been phenomenal either, but it would have been sensible.

Come back when you know what you are talking about.

Come back when you know what you are talking about.

I'm back!

For someone who's "just here to chat", you're not very pleasant. Do my questions make you feel uncomfortable?

For someone who's "just here to chat", you're not very pleasant.

I talk to people in the same manner that they talk to me. If you take the piss, I'll take the piss too. If you are polite; I will be polite too.

I have been polite throughout. Phenomenally so. But I have an inquisitive mind. A phenomenally inquisitive mind, so I like to ask questions. Phenomenal questions.

Now it's your turn to be phenomenal too. Go!
