Pretty sure in recent years it has made a small profit/broke even. Years ago it used to do quite useful research work and bred high quality rams and bulls for supply to Manx farmers.

well would have done if the the same pot of cash was not used for the staff who did paper work that had nowt to do with the farm side

Just heard that Knockaloe farm is to be rented out to other farmers and that the Minister said that it was not necessary for the government to be running a farm as it was not core business for the Isle of Man government.

Could this be a change of government policy, could we see them stop running cafés and electrical goods outlets too?

BTW what did they do at Knockaloe anyway?, experimental farm to me, has dark overtones of South Park like, 5 assed monkey breeding?

Don't think they'll close the electrical shops as they trade at a loss so in that respect they are part of goverments core business - wasting money.

As for what they did at Knockaloe - I think they spent many years trying to genetically modify the people of Peel into useful law abiding citizens. In other words they should have given up and sold it years ago.

Im not surpirised they are closing it down.

Knockaloe was supposed to be a shining of example of research into new methods of production and farming practices.

Problem being manx farmers dont want to change. At all. So any new ideas / research were probably ignored.

Nobody wants to admit it, but a fair proportion of manx farmers are not very good at their jobs. There are some excellent ones, but a lot are rubbish.

Some of the more bizarre experiments are reputed to have escaped many years ago and subsequently nested in the wild

Very true, Knockaloe did alot of experiments just because local farmers done beleive in trying anything new. Examples would be split a herd of cattle and keep 1/2 inside fed on expensive oats during the winter and the other half outside on specially grown crops like kale etc then when they both for slaughter they would report on the yeild v cost.

all good stuff but will have been done ad nauseum by any large farm in the UK but farmers here wont believe the UK evidence so knockaloe would report their finding and few of the farmers would listen anyway or change.

Shame that this is a sign of the times.

I thought it was donated in trust to the nation for the education of the young in contemporary farming methods?

it was bought after WW1 with money from Henry Bloom Noble charitable trust (the trust could in return nominate a member to the old Board of Agriculture) - maybe one of the many lawyers on the MB can state whether the terms of this donation were modified or are consistent with its new use

Good point Frances! There have certainly been instances in the past where land donated by individuals to the manx people have been used for purposes other than what was originally intended.

It would be interesting to find out?

The land was given to the gov for use as agricultural as they see fit.

It has to be used for agricultural or farming, or it has to be handed back to the trust.

The letting of the farm will still be for agricultural or farming so is within the trust rules.

  • 3 years later...

Has this present government no shame? That farm could and should be used for training people who want to develop extract a career in agriculture.

There is no career in agriculture over here so a waste of time. The current farmers have a career in collecting subsidies and building farm worker cottages for their families to live in.
