If you ever go to the Channel isles, yes they do have these outlets but they also have one thing Douglas does not, a good atmosphere!

Douglas has a good atmosphere? Don't make me laugh! At least places like St Helier strive to maintain the veneer of sophistication whereas Douglas on a Friday night is simply a shitehole full of angry fighty drunks and dickheads. Douglas town is a disgrace, and its largely because years ago we decided that we were going to pander to all the Brits coming over and turn it into a UK-style faceless craphole full of UK franchises and fast food joints.

That's what he said - they have one thing Douglas doesn't, good atmosphere.

Yawn, what century are you living in?

So what was the IOM like before us Brits came over? String quartets on every corner and kipper stew a delicacy?

Guess what....the IOM had fighty drunks and more than enough dickheads before us Brits showed up.

I don't think it's a matter of 'the Brits' coming over. An influx of settlers from elsewhere in the British Isles has been a fairly significant fact of life since the 19th century.

However, there is something to the complaint that the Island has slipped up in adopting the UK's traditionally haphazard approach to developing towns and indifference to any concern less tangible than the bottom line and the balance sheet. UK local authorities and government typically care about only one thing: Investment, and so it is on the Island, even at the expense of streets filled with tat shops, the destruction of old shop fronts and the visual character of the town, the erosion of any sense of community, the incongruent setting of bars or even lap dancing clubs, or the annihilation of local businesses thanks in part to high rents demanded by absentee landlords.

I think it's important to distinguish between the British and Britain here. The United Kingdom's parliament and local authorities are populated, as ours are, in no small part by unimaginative folk who believe that political office consists of shuffling numbers on a ledger and chasing more numbers in the form of artificial targets, with little thought for what those numbers actually mean and little worthy of the name 'principle' or even aims. It's as much a problem there as it is here, and there are plenty of people in the UK who are as critical of and as disheartened to see their communities go to rack and ruin as we are with ours.

You've obviously not been out in Douglas on any recent Friday nights. For the most part, you'd be lucky to find enough people in any one place for a fight to be started. The town is dead.

That suggests you are a youngster or have spent most of your life sitting at home grumbling.

Years ago Douglas on a Friday night was simply a shitehole full of angry fighty drunks and dickheads. Always has been depending on where you socialised. Just because a few thousand people with every right to live here have done so, doesn't make current occurences their fault.

Fellah.

A veneer of sophistication? I remember walking from the car park to the office on a Monday morning in St. Helier, avoiding the pools of vomit and broken glass. That was back in the '80s. Is it any better today? Not really. Last time I was there having a night out (christmas a couple of years ago) it was pretty much the same. A shitehole full of angry fighty drunks and dickheads. Not a very nice place.

The problem is Jersey attracts the wrong type of people, especially in the summer. You don't need a work permit and all you need to do to get a job is show a Jersey Social Security card. TO get one of those all you need is an address. So if you dont mind squatting with mates or something, it is an easy life. Loads of jobs. the british go by the boat load in the summer. work all day drink all evening throw up all night. Happy days.

I have to say that the IoM is pretty grim now by most conventional standards. I had quite high up chap from within the group of companies I work for over in the summer. He travels the world and has been to a lot of places on business and yet nearly got chinned by some pissed up fuckwitt in Colours on a quiet night out. These people are investing in the IoM and maintaining jobs here and if they leave with the impression that its just a bloody dump (as he did) its just counterproductive. Its not that bad in the CI's anymore and there are much nicer places to eat and drink than in the festering dump we know as Douglas.

You took someone that you wanted to impress to Colours? Are you completely insane?
