Two well-known and established local Strand Street stores will close over the next two years.

It was announced this afternoon that the owner Moochers Market will not be seeking to renew the lease for the sites beyond next December.

David Cretney will also close the doors of Supercards when its lease expires in December next year.

Mr Cretney, who’s also MHK for Douglas South and Minister for Infrastructure, said it was with great regret he’d come to this decision.

He added that the staff of Moochers have been given 12 months’ notice of it closing and his workers at Supercards almost two years.

However, in the year between the two stores closing there will be a reduction in the current 14 full and part-time staff.

There are also deeper fears for Strand Street, with the UK head offices of the likes of Thomas Cook, Next, Topshop, HMV and Clinton Cards all reporting significant losses over recent months.

And yet the govenment is encouraging out of town sites.

Methinks Pets at Home and PC World / Currys / Next / whomever else is just the start of things.

Come on now Allan, assure us all is well and that you will continue to support the local retail economy...

blah blah blah....what about Pizza Hut???

I've got it on good authority* that a Pizza Hut will be opening on the site of Moochers and a Burger King in Supercards.

But that is just a threat. You already have a cheaper and better card shop recently opened up 50 meters one way and Dealz 50 metres the other way. That is called competition.

Allan Bell doesn't give a toss, he thought Dealz was too down market. I think he was hoping for Fortnum & Mason to have filled the old Woolworths site instead. Maybe Harvey Nichols will take over the Moochers site...

Probably be Ratners or something...either that or a soup kitchen later in the year, we gonna need a few of them.

Shop in strand street approx £34,000 per year from strand shopping centre end of street, the closer you get to M&S the more expensive it is.

No wonder most shops are empty.

Add to that the shocking state of them. Virtually no maintenance carried out on them. No wonder people do not want to start up businesses in town
