Elephant Hunting

Recommended Posts

Very lucky for the elephants in Botswana that King Juan Carlos of Spain fell down stairs and broke his hip at the start of a hunting trip to try and add to his trophies which include his own brother who he shot dead a long time ago. I thought there was enough trouble with elephant poaching for the chinese ivory trade without bastards like him shooting them for fun as he has done before.

He has also enjoyed bear hunting, amongst others. The brother was an accident and a long time ago.

If you set his hunting proclivities aside, he is an admirable person, who renounced power following Franco's death and opted to become a constitutional monarch.

In 1981 he did not lend his support to the 23-F conspirators who attempted an anti-democratic coup, and indeed undermined the coup by winning many military leaders to the democratic cause.

He is still widely respected in Spain, largely for this reason.

He also said "Don't you ever shut up?" to Hugo Chavez,

The trip was part of an organised cull to keep the numbers manageable - not a 'lets shoot anything we can find' type of hunt.

So if he hadn't paid to take part - with the money going back into conservation measures, it would have happened anyway. In these culls, only the old or sick animals are usually killed.

We could offer adventure holidays like this on the Island, current number of 24 could be brought down to 10-ish :)

Why do they need an elephant cull?

I thought they were down to the last 500 or so a few years back.

Is it the case of we get to 625 elephants and you can have a shooting spree!

In Africa numbers have increased to ~ 18,000 as of 2008. the 500 figure is Indian elephants.

I see that King Carlos has issued an unprecedented apology saying he had made a mistake as calls were made for him to be axed from the WWF presidency. Good job he broke his hip or we might not have found out. He could always go on a less strenuous hunting trip, he could go shooting pandas in Edinburgh

He has, but the apology was more about being absent on an extravagant safari whilst his country was in severe economic crisis than it was to do with animal welfare. Hunting is a very popular pastime in Spain, and probably wouldn't evoke much opprobrium.
