Funding Pulled For Filming Of End-2-End

Recommended Posts

Do the maths.

Let's say 700 people come over for one night only at say £50 per head for hotel. 700 x £50 = £35,000 x 20% VAT = £7000. Add in all the other VATable expenditure over the weekend and this event pays for the filming, which in turn shows off our beautiful Island and might attract people back or entice others to come here. I had friends over from the UK this year purely because they saw the TT coverage and thought the place was worth a visit.

The Government's role is to get people here and allow local businesses to generate the income that justifies it.

Yes, the event is generally made up of amateurs, so what? They are exactly the type of people we want here. To argue that the event is maxed out is plain daft, if you rest on your laurels they will go to an event somewhere in the UK or Ireland instead.

I do think it would be a good idea to make it more of a weekend festival as per the Easter Athletics, maybe the organisers should consider the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August for next year.

It's the 30 odd years you still have left to go that worry many of us more .

There's the Mannin Short Film lot, why not approach them and see if they could do some sort of filming. They could then edit it to DVD and sell it. Good experience for them, tourist boost to the Islan

Beth's approach is needed on Talking Heads, at present TH is a very lazy production.

If they don't subsidise the filming, the 7 grand VAT take is pure "profit" though. I honestly can't believe it's worth any government money to have this filmed for a specialist channel. The viewers of such channels will know about the end to end anyway

Has anyone here actually watched it?

the decision is very short sighted. with all the cycling hype and the interest the event has I'd have though £7k would be a small price ot pay to have it broadcast on any TV channel, the coverage I saw of last years evet showed the island in a very good and positive light. They should be looking to promote the event more and perhaps run a series of events over a short period (like the no rest for the wicked running events) IOM this would be very attractive to moutain bikers.

I really enjoyed the interview with Geoff Corkish by Beth Espey.

How refreshing it was to hear one of our politicians being given a real "grilling" by a Manx Radio interviewer.

Beth was not rude, but just very persistent, and made it clear that she would not be "fobbed-off" by the trite responses of some third-rate "politician". I could almost see Corky squirming!

Ms Espey is like a little Rotweiller, and when she gets her teeth into something, she doesn't let go! (oooh errr Matron!)

I hope we can hear more of her on MR in the future.

Well obviously the wise heads at Tourism have decided that cycling is something which only interests a very few people, never gets any news coverage and which the British and especially the Manx have no real association with.

A quick look at the End to End website shows that they say with "support from Isle of Man Tourism and Leisure, we are able to offer one of the best value entry packages for a UK Enduro" so there must be some backing if only in terms of guarantees and use of the Villa. However the event is organised by the Manx Mountain Bike Club and I wonder if what we are seeing here a fit of sulks because someone has organised a highly successful event without the need of highly paid civil servants telling people what to do.

That said, whether there needs to be a subsidy for the filming of it is another matter. But I can't help feeling if it was a more favoured event, we would be hearing all sort of estimates of how much the "free publicity" that came from the filming was worth to the Island.

Although it probably won't be on Sky anymore now, I think with all the new local TV/Video lot, we'll still get coverage of some sort - and in the end that's all you need, right? A video from the day with the odd chance of seeing yourself cycle past the camera so you can shout to everyone else in the living room "Look! There's me!" smile.png

True and there's probably more impact audience wise from social media like youtube.

I entered lots of MTB events in the uk, not one of them was because it was on sky (dont have sky sports anyway)

Wont make a diference to entries as its already oversubscribed.

Money better saved for other things.

and maybe some shorter single speed fun events

WTF ??? Shorter events for SingleSpeeders?? You gearist... S/S events in the UK and Europe tend to be as difficult as wussy multi geared XC events just with a bit more drinking. And more fun..

I did offer to arrange a SingleSpeed hill climb on the saturday this year but apparently there wasn't enough real ale on the island to keep more than 5 S/S riders sufficiently hydrated.

I do not care what sex the interviwers are or what they look like just that when required they are able to grill the politician or whoever if required. Beth Espey seems to be able to do it and from memory at the last election one of the blokes was OK. I think it might have been James Davies. John Moss can on occasion when he appears irrated by something also get stucjk in but more often he seems happy to watch the world go by.

I would love to here Teare questioned properly. I get the feeling he might do a John Nott and walk out. Maybe next time he agrees to do Talkinh Heads Stuart should pull a sickie so that Beth Espey can be dropped on him at the last moment
