Andy Murray!

Recommended Posts

Nah, I have belief. It worked for Wimbledon (eventually) and it'll work for the World Cup.

Health permitting, I've got a good few years in me yet ;)

Absolutely wonderful performance and, who knows, we may yet see Laura Robson do the same thing in a year or two!

The only downside, for me, was to see politicians in the royal box - the same ones who cut funding for so many sporting activities - basking in the glory of one talented and determined individual.

(Grudgingly) The miserable so and so played extremely well and, yes, thoroughly deserved his win.

How come everyone just plays from the baseline now? Do they not think of coming in and attacking? Having not watched for a few years I was really surprised by that. It was like Chris Evert with muscles.

Is tennis the ultimate televised sport? I'm going to suggest that yes, it is. The viewer can engage on so many levels. The grit, determination, the joy, and of course the agony, all there on such an intimate level. Witness the players' partners share our collective pain. And their families. There's nowhere to hide. No teammates to help with the load and take some blame. The fitness levels are extraordinary, the stamina even more so. Such effort. Only one other sport comes close - darts. But not that close. The media are touting Sir Andy Murray this morning. Well it's just not good enough. He must surely be the next king. And I don't even like tennis that much.

He certainly has the demeanour.

Tennis is sh*t, I couldn't care less who wins, Andy Murray is a miserable tw*t, the other fella has a big nose....I felt like being a troll and I have to be honest it did feel a bit good but I didn't ever want to do it on an important topic biggrin.png

Did you see Salmond unfurling his saltire before they quickly cut to another shot? He looks a bit too well fed to be a revolutionary to me.

Which would mean following in the finest traditions of Nigel Mansell and Mark Cavendish. In actual fact, I think the change of personnel around him has had a very positive effect in the last couple of years - not just in his play and his temperament, but also in overcoming what was an innate shyness. As his confidence has grown, I think we've seen quite a pleasant and personable bloke begin to emerge.

I like Andy Murray. He's said many times that he is purposely boring in interviews in case he says the wrong thing and creates a media shitstorm. He just wants to play tennis, so he gets his head down and does it without a load of attention seeking bullshit.

But regarding Cavendish, have you ever heard one of his interviews? He's certainly not boring, and must be a journalist's dream come true with all the controversial things he says (or used to when he was younger). He's brutally honest, and doesn't mind slagging off competitors or journalists to get his point across. You may not like him, but to say he's no personality is just wrongheaded.

Well done Andy Murray cracking victory. The semi final with Novack and Del Porto was more enjoyable to watch though, maybe because I did not mind who won; it was tennis at another level.

That youtube video of Fred Perry is an eye opener, I know that racquet's have improved and training is scientific these days but honestly, they were knocking the ball over the net with it going over in a big arc, not hit hard in virtually a straight line, if you know what I mean.

Maybe someone who knows more about tennis can explain but that match looked on par with the standard that I have seen played on tennis courts over here between "Ladies that Lunch"

Watching the tennis this year after many years ignoring it I was amazed by the style. I was expecting something like those titanic struggles between Connors and McEnroe, all serve, volley and attack or power like Sampras only to be faced with a baseline game that was a souped up version of what Chris Evert used to play. I was left wondering what had happened to bring it to this.
