Pierrot Lunaire 2,276
After the double fatality in Manchester recently, there were many who thought that it was time to arm the police. I'm not a fan of this idea myself. And here's one reason why.
slinkydevil 4,870
Wasn't there a similar case of a man carrying a wooden table leg who was shot because they thought it was a sawn off shotgun? EDIT: here you go http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2004/oct/29/ukcrime1
Ruger 57
This is the trouble, their to much of a joke!. What about the fecking do-gooder who reported him to the police as carrying a “samurai sword”?. Should of gone to specsavers much?!.You couldn't make it up.
manxman1980 1,569
The majority of the Police force are not in favour of being armed either! I do not believe that had the officers who were killed in Manchester been armed it would have made any difference to the outcome. Last reports were that one officer had removed her Taser to use - surely it takes the same time to remove the Taser and it does a fire arm...
x-in-man 2,256
Good God NO! Can you imagine the scene at Nobles A&E when they all turn up on the second day of being armed .. having shot themselves by accident.

P.K. 5,090
This is the trouble, their to much of a joke!. Agreed. It should be in the 'Jokes' section between 'Balanced Budget' and 'Democracy'. What about the fecking do-gooder who reported him to the police as carrying a “samurai sword”?. Should of gone to specsavers much?!.You couldn't make it up. A drunk carrying a samurai sword was later arrested by some sensible officers....
MilitantDogOwner 307
Hell no. Only specialist officers deployed in certain situations. The general rank and file police officer is not mentally prepared for the potential of an armed conflict situation. This is why the Armed Forces drill their personnel continously, to prepare them for the stresses of the battlefield. You can't expect the rank and file office to do every day policing (writing parking tickets and interviewing about a break in, etc) to the engage in a armed situation. This is why armed police officers are specially selected and trained. Being armed would not made the slightest bit of difference to the situation in Manchester. They were ambushed by an assailant with the intention of killing them.
macmannin 105
The armed officers were not so special regarding Jean Charles.
MilitantDogOwner 307
The armed officers were not so special regarding Jean Charles. The officer who shot JCM, had been a member of the Mets "elite" SO19 teams, although he had never fired a shot in a live fire situation in the 12 years he had been a firearms officer. I remember reading a book by one of SO19's "elite" officers, and he claimed they saw more action that the SAS. Yeah......seems legit. Maybe the armed response role should be taken from the police and handled by the Armed Forces, who are better equipped and better trained to deal with "combat" situations. Ruger 57
A drunk carrying a samurai sword was later arrested by some sensible officers.... Cheers. Not so bad then, I just saw an earlier news article about it which didn’t mention that.
immortalpuppet 221
Christ no, different mindsets and training. Instinctive firing of a weapon is different to the way police officers are trained to use force.
Max Power 6,578
Personally I think all IoM Constabulary officers should be armed. Just something else for the Govt. to blow a fortune on, more toys for the boys.
Monkey boy 2,624
I don't think they're ready for guns just yet. They haven't got the hang of driving police cars yet - one thing at a time eh.
