The Legislative Council - Now A Worthless Money Pit?

Have to wonder - given the dire list of first round candidates for election - whether our revising chamber really is worth the cost, especially in these straitened times when youngsters are being forced to pay to learn, benefits are cut, & the sick are about to fall victim to cuts - sorry prioritisation - by Dave 'Beast' Anderson

Looking at those standing for re-election, you have the sorry figure of Juan 'Turd' Turner - a 'yoof' station media mogul who had all the sense to second & vote for the daft student fees proposal, hitting hard those who are presumably his main listeners & therefore his own market

Even the one candidate with an electoral mandate is presumably seeking to jump up so's not to have to face the anguish of exposing himself to real voters ever again

Ask yourself, what is the point of it in this day and age

Better that we have a modern, participative form of government - abolish this anachronism now!

And who nominated Juan!

And Juan is not answerable to those damned students is he. Untouchable he is and yet he has shat all over them.

I hope the school kids realise all this and they use their vote wisely in 2016. Kids of 13 today will be voting come the next general election.

A less than inspiring listen on Sunday Opinion this afternoon to the phony politics of the LegCo election. Only six candidates because Juan Turner couldn't make it. You'd rather think he'd make the effort wouldn't you ? Linda Bowel-Cash (?) gave us a wonderful professional business C.V. that would doubtless stand her in good stead for.......well a career in business perhaps ? She couldn't make clear where she stood in relation to Liberal Vannin, and was one leg in and one leg out. Geoff gave us the old safe hands routine, experience, no change, wisdom of the elders, and so on, and that even if he was jumping ship he'd still represent the people of West Douglas. It also came out that Geoff could vote for himself whereas the others couldn't, so he's got a ten yards start before a shot is even fired. Roger managed another dig at the FOI 'anoraks' and still doesn't get it about the need for cultural change in Manx politics. There was understandably no criticism at all of the current government, their policy or direction; no surprise considering that they will be looking for their votes; yet much lofty talk of the democratic value of second chambers, checks and balances etc. As we've said so many times: 'You couldn't make it up'

Sensible chap called Chris came on the Mannin Line towards the end - don't know if it was Chris Thomas or not - who did talk about this for a bit

Can't see that we're ever going to get consensus politics here without a much braver media

Anyone have ideas?
