It is normal practice to have a 40th anniversary after 40 years has passed. It avoids confusion.

I was 13 that year, a group of us were playing football in the square of garages behind Windsor road; where Windsor Court now stands. We noticed a great, black plume of smoke and rushed down Crellins

Should a sequential set of photos (not seen for almost 40 years ) of the fire from start to finish be published or would you consider it to be insensitive. So many people have no idea of this disaste

Does anyone have any details about the Memorial Service to mark the 40th Anniversary of the Summerland Disaster?

A memorial will be unveiled on August 2nd, I haven't heard about a service.

According to the Douglas Borough Council website:

Memorial in Kaye Memorial Garden at the foot of Summer Hill to be unveiled by Her Worship the Mayor, Councillor Carol Malarkey JP., at a service of remembrance on the evening of Friday August 2nd and dedicated by the Ven Andrew Brown Archdeacon of Man.

Council Leader Councillor David Christian JP says: ‘Friday August 2nd will mark the 40th anniversary of what was one of the most tragic events in Manx modern-day history

You could contact them for more details.

Why did it take 40 years to do this ?

"There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn't do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done!"

Pretty true of most of the threads on MF

Why did it take 40 years to do this ?

Collective denial. Always celebrate Winter Hill, sinking of boats etc. but Summerland? Waiting 40 years is a disgrace, at least something's happening now that those responsible aren't around...

aren't they! I know a few still about, some very prominent people still keeping their heads below the pavement.they know who they are!

I think that although it was in many ways a terrible and tragic accident, there was also a strong suggestion of possible criminal negligence surrounding the whole Summerland disaster, and there would surely have been the possibility of lawsuits if it had happened today. There was very little accountability in the IOM then (or now even) and I think that the current 'memorial' stone, little more than a bootjack and footscraper, hidden away in the garden at the bottom of Summerhill, could be seen to say a lot about the wish, by certain parties, to make the whole thing go away. Arguably, they even conned many of the public into an unwitting act of collective amnesia. On a positive note, it's nice to see that they're finally doing the right thing.

I would greatly appreciate being pointed in the direction of the "prominent people still keeping their heads below the pavement" as I still have questions I require answers to.
