Manx Nostalgia

Recommended Posts

I use Facebook for my fledgling little business. Plus I love the access to the likes of Manx Nostalgia and people and groups from other places where I've lived.

It's also great as a networking tool for local businesses, especially the small ones. Local charities use it as do the Police, Mea and many other useful pages. It's handy for finding groups both local and worldwide that have particular interests and hobbies - crafting, photography, bikes, pets etc. In fact most hobby interests are featured with lots of local bargains to be had too.

Don't be put off. There's a lot of really good stuff on there.

The promenade used to look pretty good before the tourist decline and it was turned into a carpark.

The adverts are a pain - trying to hook me up with Ukrainian women and what appear to be Asian transvestites.

Thats called targeted advertising.

Fez up ELI. Nothing wrong with a bit of variety, it's the spice of life. Edited by Lisenchuk

Maybe you dreamt it?

Err, no. Thanks for the input but it was real. It must have been taken in the 1940s or so, and Kylie Minogue was in the background riding a wooly mammoth.

The hotel was probably imposed with photoshop.

Douglas used to look much better before we had any money, and before 30 years of total contempt and incompetence sucked every penny and shred of dignity the town had out. Leaving it like a desolate, concrete, carpark, full of dogshit and empty flats.

Another good one:

'Braddan Open Air Service - nothing special about this Service but if you look further you can see the old fashioned way of Harvest on the hill and also Ballamona Hospital with it's Tower.'

What was in the original Palace building?

The last of the major dancehalls to be formed after the Marina, Falcon Cliff and Derby Castle.

The Palace complex, including an enormous ballroom, was opened in 1887, the ballroom roof was damaged by fire in 1902 and was rebuilt; it burned down again in 1920 and was again rebuilt. The Palace Colliseum theatre, capable of seating 3500 and connected to the dancehall by a bridge, was opened in 1913 by Vesta Tilley.

The Palace Colliseum and entrance were demolished in 1965 to make room for the architecturally uninspired Palace Hotel and Casino (the first licenced casino in the British Isles).

The Palace ballroom claimed to be one of (if not) the largest in Europe with its parquet floor. Demolished in 1994 to make room for an extension to the Casino.

Also, from this photo, they were building airships in it during WW1. I've never heard that before.
