Hi all,

Looking at getting myself either a Macbook Pro Retina 13" or Macbook Air 13" for University, however, I'm torn.

The Air is cheaper, I can get better storage for the same price, along with better battery life.

The Retina has the far better screen and more ports.

However, the Retina 13" is said to struggle running the upscaled display and the Iris Pro graphics really suffer, and running Windows on that screen also suffers because everything is tiny.

Does anyone have any experience with either machine? I've played around with the Air extensively as family members have them, but I've not used the Retina nearly as much.

My parents just had exactly the same dilemma and went for the retina in the end. They bit the bullet and paid for the model with extra storage, its a lovely machine.

My only concern is that the integrated GPU is said to struggle with the high resolution, have you noticed that at all?

I've only dabbled with it as its not mine (I have a non-retina 13") but I've heard no complaints from my parents.

I use one as a daily work machine running full Adobe suite - After Effects, Premiere Pro, Speedgrade, Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator. It gets pushed and I've never had a gltch with the retina display.

The only problem is working with Photoshop CC 2014 which has a retina ready GUI, but is a pain with web graphics rendering at half size on 100% so it's too tiny too see, so you work at 200% with a slight blur. There are workarounds but I use an external monitor for some work or if I'm doing pixel perfect stuff I just use Sketch from Bohemian.

Retina for the win. It's a massive difference! Even on our iPad air it's just so much clearer.

I also use an LG 27" super wide as an external display for programing etc. Great side by side but quality is less.

I'm using the new mac book pro, i7.

Highly recommend going for the newest with retina.
