Ours was much better last night as well. Our upgraded account seems to be maxing out at about 38-40Mbps again, even off-peak, which is how it was before (even though we are still syncing higher) and the ping is way more reliable, always mid 20's. Watched a couple of Netflix movies with no problems. Hopefully they've got it sorted and it wasn't just all the nighbours buggering off for the weekend.

Mine's been pretty good last couple of days too. Download speed isn't the bump I was expecting but it's now slightly above my old speed consistently (and so, technically an upgrade) but the upload is great and the latency is very stable. Overall I'm pretty happy now and I'm sure Wimanx will carry on tweaking here and there to make things better.

If the connections are contended as a whole at MT then it doesn't matter what Wi-Manx do. It's all about the 49 other people you are sharing your bandwidth with, doesn't matter if they're Wi-Manx, Sure or MT customers. I know a couple of MT customers who are experiencing the same issue. It's been over sold, plain and simple. But the same as ans I'm happy with the extra upload speeds and a reliable ping, the download seems to be the sacrificial lamb even during the day.

What strikes me as odd though, is that it was always superb on VDSL, whatever time of day

Has there really been a massive surge in new customers / existing customers downloading more? Anything i download has to be scheduled to start from 1am, as its just not worth starting any sooner

I look at it as a pie. With VDSL everybody was capped at 40 maximum and there was enough pie to go around, even with everybody digging in at the same time. Now with super duper VDSL+ or whatever they call it some people will no doubt be getting a full 80, others 70, some of us about 45..cough. But I don't think the total pie size has changed, just the size of the forks some people have. This is made worse by different ISPs having different rules as to how people can use their fork. At the end of the day you and 49 others are sharing that pie. Before dishing out bigger forks to people they really should have looked at the total pie size. When I say they I mean MT and their core infrastructure, because that's where the contention/sharing is dished out.

By doubling up they've really found the upper limit of what they can dish out at the moment, again in some locations. Others seem to be fine. Some of my friends in and around the centre of Douglas are getting amazing speeds. I'm in the same boat as you somewhatdamaged and imagine you are living on a fairly new build private estate with plenty of families with kids about? Once you get in to the land of multiple HD streams, modern game downloads and a couple of tech savvy teenagers it's not too hard to see people using up their extra speed and the impact it has on everybody else. The contention issue has always been there it's just generally we've had enough total to not make it too noticable.

Edit - Forgot to add. I my opinion it was another ISP that started this race to the bottom. But atleast they realised eventually and started to cap the number of people who could use thier service in each area. They didn't have enough pie.

Agree with the above, only comment/question is that I thought contention pools were dynamic and non-geographic these days. So there's a load balancing done in the core that makes sure he heavy users are evenly spread so everyone suffers the pain, rather than the poor sod who lives in a road with 48 NNTP leeches and can't even get to this email. Not 100% on that though so happy to be corrected.

That's what I thought too, but I know the people "around here" are getting similar performance to me across the various ISPs. My mates in the centre of town seem to have far more performance at peak times even with broadly similar sync speeds. Or maybe they've just got lucky for now? Either way I think we're at about the limit that the domestic infrastructure over here is going to support and as more and more people take an upgrade to VDSL it isn't going to get any better.

On the plus side 4G is brilliant, I'm considering switching my router over to using that for its primary connection, no good for gaming but great for everything else.

Bit disappointed in this really as its the same download give or take but only the upload has increased. This is Sync'd at 82339kb DOWN AND 10999kb up.
