Hospital Car Park

Provision of the car park is far from free. It has costs a substantial amount of tax payers money. Provision of health care is (presently) free at the point of use but parking of motor vehicles without some recoup of the investment should not be.

Concessions, yes. Discounts where appropriate, yes, but free?

No.

Charging apart from recouping the investment will have the added advantage of motivating people to use public transport so reducing the load placed on the car park, that will remove much of the need to expand the car park - at additional cost using money that the Island doesn't have - and benefit the people who really need to drive to the hospital using their own vehicles.

It is absolutely the right thing to do.

Cars were actually blocking the entrance yesterday. The man there seems oblivious to people dumping their cars right outside the doors! The car park is obviously a dumping area for Douglas' workers cars.

Maybe time to try park and ride once again? It failed last time but maybe the time is right to get really firm this time.

I work at the Education Centre at the hospital and am on a lot less than 100,000 per year - as are a lot of staff. Many people working there will be on a fairly basic wage and paying for parking will bite hard. I realise people think everyone's on megabucks, but it's not the case.

If it needs to be done, then it's understandable, and I'll make it work out, but with costs coming from all sides I'm beginning to wonder if my poor parents will ever be rid of me.

One of my kids is on minimums wage. Government still thinks he can afford £6 a day to park a car in a Douglas carpark to get to and from shifts (that don't fit in with bus timetables) so why should we have any sympathy with you when it's your employer that has been forcing these charges on to us for the last 10 years? Either we all pay or nobody pays. Why do government workers think they should be fucking exempt from everything?

no... parking for visiting hospital should always be free .... build another carpark nearby with proper park and ride at reasonable price .... not ad hoc affair tight arses use now

Do Braddan Commissioners own any land in that area? Maybe they could build a Park and Ride.

Because they work in Douglas city centre and have a more reliable bus service which can actually get them to work which provides them with options? They also have the amenities of a city centre, and the charges that come with that.

Usually when you work outside of the city centre you don't expect parking charges - I've worked in Douglas centre and chosen to pay or get the bus respectively, and I've worked in outlying areas and haven't. That's fairly common as far as I'm aware. The hospital isn't in the city centre, and therefore you wouldn't expect parking charges.

It's all to do with space. Yes, space isn't abundant - that's why I park away from the main building in the overflow car park. If there was a bus that got me there on time and got me back home any time around when I started and finished I'd get that.

I'm not defending Government spending, just pointing out that not everyone working at the hospital is swimming in money and that charging for parking would be a hit to lower waged staff. At least those working in Douglas have already factored this in.

But yes, what I mean by all of this is that I should be exempt from absolutely everything and I think I'm better than everyone ever.

I'm not having a go specifically at you - but none of us have any money. Survey after survey shows the average wage here is relatively low. It doesnt stop IOMG (your employer) screwing everyone else though. Why is your need for free parking greater than anyone else's?

At what point did I say my need was greater? I just said it'd be a blow to people on lower wages. I don't think that's an unfair statement?

Also, for all you know, I could be a cleaner or caterer working for a firm who's contracted by the Government. Not everyone who works at the hospital is a Government employee.

In terms of none of us having any money, I'd wager that quite a few people are doing a lot better than others. I certainly wouldn't compare myself with a consultant money wise, nor an established professional working in Douglas. If parking charges are the way it goes, then that's what happens and I'll deal with it, but it's certainly not easy at the moment.

You seemed to be stating a case specificlly for people who work at the Education Centre when really this is affecting all low paid workers - public or private sector. Low paid workers already have to pay £6 a day to IOMG to park in Douglas. On minimum wage, like my lad, that's an hours pay gone to IOMG in parking fees. Why should one class of skint employee be different to any other?

For all I know you "could be" ....... But let's face it you aren't otherwise you'd have worded it differently.

It's not specifically for anyone, if you started charging for parking at any workplace that currently doesn't charge no one's going to be happy about it, and it's going to seem like a wage cut. Low paid workers everywhere are effected, and that's not good. It's terrible that some people can't afford the transport to work, I'm not saying it's sensible or that I agree.

I've mentioned before what my job is, but there's plenty of people working at the hospital that aren't Government.

It just seems unfair that you're taking a 'screw you' attitude just because of who employs people. I couldn't do my job in the private sector - isn't available here. As I've said, it's usually a case that parking's free outside of a town centre. People often take jobs with this in mind - it's why I ended up where I am and not in the town centre.

It's not right, and it's not fair as the majority of jobs are in the centre, however that's also where there's less space for parking. Why should I have to pay for parking just because someone else does? I'll do it if I have to, I don't have any other option as the bus won't get me in on time, but it's not an easy amount of money to write off. This isn't about who employs me, it's about an extra charge which didn't previously exist, it's not something anyone's going to be chuffed about, is it?

An interesting point. Stand by any main road and look at the distribution of expensive cars going past. There are a lot of them. It seems to me that anyone who can afford to run a brand new car costing North of 50 grand can probably afford a bit of extra tax. So why not increase Income Tax - ie tax those who can afford it most - rather than sneaking in these charges which disproportionately affect those on lower incomes.

We forget that many jobs these days are contracted out, and I would wager that a lot of employees are actually on the minimum wage ( along with working awkward hours/split shifts etc when there are no buses ... )

The truth is they can't afford to buy them (the vast majority anyway). Low mileage lease deals, most of the people you see driving 40,50,60 grand cars around here are up to their necks in mortgage payments, car lease payments and M&S grocery bills. Come the end of the month they don't have a pot to piss in, even those on decent salaries. The Isle of Man has a fantastic culture of having to keep up with your neighbours and friends. If you're not looking at having some work done on your house, 2-3 holidays a year and a new car on the drive then you're just now successful enough, I thought everybody knew this?

Very little is going to convince that type of person to give up some of their lifestyle in exchange for paying more in to a tax pot, especially when the current tax pot is wasted keeping lazy "I've got a GCSE C in English" government staff in the same sort of lifestyle that you are asking people to compromise.

I must be old fashioned , or naiive. Sadly I'm not looking to have some work done on the house, do not get 2-3 holidays a year, and can't afford 50 grand for a gas guzzler - ergo I am not successful.

However, I can see this Government for what it it is - i.e. pathetic , and running round like a bunch of headless chickens in the vainglorious hope that they can somehow get more revenue. As was noted in a recent post - Gawne was told to SAVE x millions ... not try to squeeze it out of the hapless voters.

I can only hope that as many people as possible read these forums ( and begin to contribute ). It's one small way to change public opinion.
