Shetland IS a long way off but I used to pick up Manx Radio 1368 when I visited up there.

If you want to immediately fall out with a Shetlander refer to the 'Shetlands'. with an 's'. It annoys them. If they like you they might tell you this if they don't like you they let you carry on!

'Shetland Isles' or 'Shetland' but never the Shetlands. It is akin to referring to the Isle of Man as that place near Southampton or something. (The singular word Shetland means a group of Islands and doesn't need pluralising further.)

I just thought I'd mention that for those people from the Isle of Man who are going to the Island Games in Shetland later on in the year. The place has a very strong identity. I hope our people learn something from them.

The people of Shetland believe themselves to be Shetlanders first, Norwegians second and possibly Scottish, or maybe, even British next!!

Independence is a frame of mind.

So Shetland Isles is tautologous then.

Indeed.

A bit like saying:

"How are the two twins then" instead of " How are the twins" (that last bit for TheSun readers amongst us).

Nothing wrong with The Sun btw. I read it cover to cover in the Students Union at my Yorkshire Uni back in the late 70s/early 80s just to pee off my friends in the Socialist Workers Party. Trolling was invented long before this internet thingy you know.

And in any case, I'm sick of Upstream and think it is about time he took a back seat for a while.

Bye, Bye Upstream.

(Before you go - Pissing off the student's section of the Socialist Workers Party isn't trolling - their whole raison d'etre is to be pissed off, you were doing them a favour. )
