Malarkey is such a clueless tit.

This is extraordinary really.

To be fair no private investor in their right mind is going to buy this anyway. Simply because they are going to be able to do very little with it without objections from the commissioners and all and sundry in the town.

Objections don't really mean anything nowadays https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=729833353718431&id=142128942488878

Whoa! whoa! whoa there boy.

That link criticises the great Phil Gawne when he was a Minister.

I thought everybody on the Island has agreed that he is going to be the saviour of the Isle of Man.

Or maybe it's just him.

Put the war memorial somewhere else. That's not a big problem really. It's in an odd place anyway, the Mooragh Park would be a nice location.

No .Bloody hell .No!

The principle of a war memorial is not to remember the wars - or glorify any war - or our glorious leaders on horse back in bronze but it is to remind us that people died, mostly ordinary , everyday sort of folk and it was very important that these memorials were situated in places where people passed by doing ordinary everyday things and glancing as they passed took a second to reflect to on what had happened to people just like them. That is why they are situated were they are. That is why this one is situated where it is.

They are not ornaments!

get a grip man. nobody is buried underneath it. the park is a better spot. plus if it is there to put us off war it hasnt done much of a job, it's there to make heroes of our martyrs and inspire the next generation to sign up. the same as it is everywhere else in the world.

Sure. Why don't we put it on castors so we can wheel it out the way when it's not needed. That also lets us just shove it out of sight to avoid the annoyance of the large number of people who were sent to their death on the pretext of "fighting for the country".

The memorial should stay exactly where it is. That way it won't cost a fortune to move it, and it won't be damaged either.

It is not about heroes, though a few undoubtedly were.It is not about martyrs,if any thought they were, I doubt.

It is not a cemetery. There certainly are plenty of those for those who did not disappear into the Flanders mud or were turned to vapour or suffered one of many other horrors .There were also those died -got flu or dysentery but died non the less.

War memorials are not there to encourage or glorify war or deter you from war they were put there for ordinary folk when passing by to pause ocassionally in their busy lives and just briefly reflect -to THINK

but as you demonstrate so well Stinker, this can fail.

I know the official line hampster. No need to quote it to me verbatim. Would you say that the war memorials in places like russia, north korea or iran are there for the same reasons you say ours are? And anyway, i wasn't saying get rid of it. Just that there is no specific reason why it needs to be in that specific place. I think the park would be a better setting

For the most part, yes. They're erected by communities that have lost many people in war. North Korea is probably the outlier here, as I don't think there are any? Instead just statues of "glorious leaders". Could be wrong there.
