Ramsey Courthouse For Sale

Recommended Posts

All quiet Tarne - shouldn't be long though, the building is apparently the heart of the community. Something so important is unlikely to remain unused for long.

So....page 10 of the Examiner.

RTC Lead Member for Finance Juan McGuinness, in drawing comparisons with ongoing Castletown Old Police Station deal with MNH, says that RTC had to "fight tooth and nail" to broker the purchase of the Ramsey Courthouse and also "paid over the odds" for it.

Will this impress the Ramsey ratepayers, given that they still have not yet the right to amble through said Courthouse..?

As an actual Ramsey ratepayer I'm fine with that.  It strikes me that most of the people complaining aren't even from Ramsey.  Indeed, some may not even be based on the Isle of Man.  It's hard to say when they don't reveal their location.

What is the plan for the building?

Still inclined to think it was a bit of a luxury.

I think Rhumsaa wants to open a branch of Mountain warehouse in there.

Ramsey town council are going to use Ramsey Courthouse to store all their other good ideas.

It was allegedly meant to be opening as an arts/performance space at one point (and was aligned to the Programme for Government - Geoff Corkish (being the champion assigned) - but I think that may have fallen through as they realised that the space isn't suitable.

But, give them their due - RTC are taking it very seriously and have slashed their butty and biscuit budget to set aside £35k to make it ready for occupation - by whom, or for what purpose is unclear - maybe all mothballed ideas, as Albert says.

I think the benefit of RTC owning it is that they will have better control on the standards of whomever commercially rents it from them. The other alternative would be to relocate the library there and repurpose the freed up space at the Town Hall. That would be suitably bohemian - sat outside the front with a book and a coffee..

Could they really exercise control? If there's limited interest, then they'd be duty bound to see a return on it rather than it sit empty.

Move the library there is, of course, what will happen. Then the police station could expand their premises. And then the whole game of pointless, musical chairs could be exposed as what it really is: a waste of money.

Repurpose. What a bloody awful (and usually expensive!) word.

The reality is that the purchase was a poorly thought through knee jerk reaction brought about by well meaning public pressure. And the same thing is now happening in Castletown.

The building has running costs and these have to be met by a commercial income stream or the tax/ratepayer.

Whilst I can appreciate the reasons and sentiment (as above post) driving the purchase, the fact is that this "heart of the community" has been locked up and inaccessible to the townspeople now for getting on for 2(?) years. Is it really therefore all that important? Are people protesting outside over its ongoing closure?

The furore over the resiting of the Post Office facility to the Spar shop has quickly dissipated - now people simply come and go from there in their PO dealings without a second thought.

Will the Courthouse really be all that important? Still no firm use publicly announced for it, news that a further £35k already has to be assigned for any conversion works and an authoritative comment that too much was paid. Perhaps doesn't bode well?

I always found the principle of buying something when you had no clue what you were going to do with it rather odd. Smacks of having more money than sense.
