Ramsey always gets overlooked when it comes to government spending so, when things like this come up, people are annoyed that it is more chipping away at the town. I think pretty much every town feels a bit like this, other than Douglas which gets all the spending but still manages to look like a hellhole.

This was a total waste of money, egged on by naive Commissioners who didn't really have an end-game. Nobody in private enterprise would be allowed to go on a spending spree without a plan, at the very least. Here, we just had pie in the sky.

So they're lumbered with it. What to do now? Might as well use it as a social enterprise of some sort, or an indoor market. To follow the inevitable and end up as a landlord on a property that will cost more to maintain than it will ever recoup, without some sort of social good, would be a real scandal.

That makes it even worse. A vocal minority have kicked up a fuss without even knowing who was going to buy it and what their plans were going to be for the building.

A vocal minority who happened to be Commissioners with the ability to spend Ramsey ratepayer's money on a whim. Hopefully the ratepayers will remember this next time there is a election. If they can be bothered to vote, of course.

I believe it was going to be a wine bar, the thing had protected status so changes would have to be tasteful. The guy backed out as soon as the baying mob kicked off, now there is a derelict building which nobody wants or has any sensible idea what to do with.

Subway. McD's. Frankie and Benny's. Greggs. Dominos. Nandos. KFC. Starbucks (already got 2 Costas).

The "Heart of the Community". All under one roof. Befitting Ramsey being the "culinary capital of the Island".

Crazy. So they now admit they had no idea what they wanted or needed it for?

I feel harsh picking on Commissioners because I know it's a fairly thankless task, but this is all entirely predictable and will now be a drain on the public purse for years to come, only to be sold off (probably at a loss) years down the line.

Giving up your time to be a Commissioner is worthy. However it should be done to serve the local community not push personal agendas and opinions. Nobody should have the ability to spend six-figure sums of funds raised by compulsory taxation on projects of limited or unproven value with impunity. Nationally, or locally. The Ramsey Courthouse expenditure needs to be properly audited and made a matter of public record.
