PSM Commissioners 'find' £200k in Finances

Quite an amazing story appears in this week's Examiner.

Port St, Mary Commissioners have apparently found nearly £200k in their finances that they didn't realise was there and are having a difficult time trying to track down where it actually came from.

Back in 2002 the same local authority found itself with some huge unexpected debts and had to be put into special measures along with setting the highest rate on the island (at the time).

A report in 2004 found that expenditure had exceeded income by nearly £250k.

The DOI (responsible for overseeing local authorities) don't seem to be bothered by the whole affair and say it's an issue for the local authority and their auditors!!

£200k isn't a small amount for an authority of that size!!

The whole issues of tin-pot local authorities needs to be addressed and soon!

There must have been some total dickheads on the commissioners, in the office and among the auditors over the years, that's all I can say. If you could peruse the accounts of a small outfit like that for an hour and not have a good grasp of how its finances stood then there's either something lacking with the you or with the record keeping. Lancashire County Council it ain't.

Didn't the 2002-04 overspend arise from a Councillor having some grand ideas for PSM? Name escapes me now but it was big ego fest IIRC.

Bentley. Bought some corporation muck cart from overseas at huge expense , the company selling it his brother or brother in law or such worked for the firm. When it arrived didn't things fall off it or breakdown at regular intervals and the replacement parts could only be acquired from Outer Mongolia or further afield. Hence it was left to sit and rot for years whilst they had to hire out Marown, PE, Braddan muck cart. Obviously this is unsubstantiated but truth lies within this.

Hopefully some PSM ratepayers will demand that whoever controls the authority finances and whichever concern signs them off each year is either keelhauled or removed from post or dispensed with. Surely more proof of the levels of ineptitude that exist within some of our LAs.

There was a huge rate hike to cover this when it first surfaced IIRC (that nobody had an option about not paying, just in case the money turned up).

Don't suppose there'll be any refunds in the offing though...?

There are two important questions that need answering here:

1 Can I get a job in the accounts department for PSM Commissioners

2 How much are Spanish villas going for nowadays.

And the small matter of why the auditors didn't spot it for years?
