However there were loads of complaints this year because the buses at certain times were full almost as soon as they started the route.  Perhaps they are going to schedule extra buses to prevent this happening again.

That would be reasonable if they did that.

However, I got the impression much of the problem was using single deckers.

Also delays meant buses arrived as the passengers began to arrive for the next one - so you'd have one full bus followed shortly after by an empty one. Maybe they could have a few standby buses for that situation.

I do hope they've remembered to put on extra buses for the Festival of Jurby tomorrow.

The queues last year were epic.

There are some special and extra buses listed but whether they match demand is another matter.  As Declan says they have a tendency to allocate double and single deckers randomly without any regard for expected numbers and usually without the excuse of double deckers being needed elsewhere.  I wonder if Longworth is still trying to pretend we don't need double deckers and he was right to flog all those ones off.

I'm also a bit flummoxed about why they are having this row about TT holidays, as they don't put that many extra buses on and they would be more than counterbalanced by not doing school runs and routes involving the course.  Maybe they feel that if some DoI people have to work, then everyone else in the Department must suffer as well - even though it would actually increase the number of drivers you would need to employ the rest of the year.   It looks like another of those pointless rows where both sides try to show how tough they are, while the taxpayers and the passengers suffer.

Angry of Onchan has shared the driver's perspective...

"BUS DISPUTE UPDATE - THE DRIVERS SIDE
The following is a statement sent to IOM News and Politics by an employee of the transport division of the DOI who wishes to remain anonymous: “There are 94 full time drivers, During TT they had an agreement in place where 15 were allowed time off, this was reduced to 10 and has been further reduced to 7. These drivers do marshalling and other TT activities which leaves 83 full time drivers. The management want this reduced to 4, the drivers have refused this request as the 7 drivers are then covered by casual drivers and part time drivers. This year’s TT had up to ten drivers at any one time sitting in the canteen and they actually had a surplus of drivers this year because of a shortages of double deck Buses. In the year 2016 when Longworth was selling the fleet of old buses the drivers brought it to the attention of management there would not be enough for the schools or during the TT. This was ignored .Every bus in the. fleet including mini buses were put on the road while drivers were waiting for work, They could easily have had more drivers off but the management want less, This is really astonishing as new terms and conditions are have been signed by both parties. This is causing unnecessary worry, stress and depression which can be avoided, The drivers are not monsters as portrayed. They have refused a request by management to drive up to 16 hours in one day recently for safety reasons. The drivers have been trying to negotiate but it’s all been one way on the side of management.”

HTF can you get depression from either driving or not driving a bus?

In my book putting food on the table for the missus and kids is top of my list of priorities.

So basically...having to provide cover of any type, that costs additional monies, means taxpayers are effectively paying additonal cash out for these people to marshall or carry out TT duties.

Notwithstanding paying for sh1t management that leaves all too many drivers sat on their arse waiting for work to be allocated.

Last TT he was down at the bus station waiving them in and out. He seemed to be more of a nuisance than anything.

PK makes a good point, they don't seem to forcast demand very well to apply their resources effectively.
