This is a joke...surely

I actually think it's a great idea, but what are the bus drivers doing the rest of time?

Why not just subsidise journeys and let people choose their own routes? Might result in a bit of private enterprise popping up. The days of empty buses driving all around the north taking one person to Bride are surely coming to an end?

Invite Uber or Lyft here for tax benefits if they make Uber for the island. Problem solved. It's fucking great.

No they’ll be putting taxi firms out of business now to keep those IOMG empires ticking over. There’s no demand for a bus so let’s turn a bus into a taxi and steal fares from all the people who currently dont use a bus. Perfect IOMG logic to keep the bloat going.

it'll work just grand,

'hello is Tha dial a bus'

'yes, happy to help, where are you and where do you need to go'

'Jurby, to Nobles, then Tesco'

'Great - Juan is going to Nobles next Wednesday, we can do you then'.

'and back again?'

'Mable is going that way at the end of next month - we've booked you on, don't be late, we won't wait'

My guess is that it is doomed before it even starts. How can a bus service that reportedly loses money year on year, justify putting these on.

So it's okay to lose money then?

It doesn’t lose money it costs money.

Schools don’t lose money, hospitals don’t lose money. But they cost it.

The question should really be does this cost provide value for money and is it as cost we want the state to accept.

It's a finite difference between "cost" and "lose" - either way I don't believe it is value for money

Actually, its a great idea, but they need uber technology to make it more effective.

Then you can download an app and see where the bus is, and also to book a place on it, and to see how long it will take to get to your destination, and the cost.  And a central software program to continually work out and update the route for the driver.

If they can do that for the north then they can roll it out across the island.

And if people know where the bus is, then can either decide to walk or cycle in, or get a taxi, if its going to be too long.

In fact they should offer various bus companies from across the chance to trial it out for a year for free to see if their system can be proved here so they can sell it to other rural areas.

Several countries already have a similar mobile app. But the pick-up, drop-off it is limited to the "official" stops. The buses operating the routes are tracked by using 4G/WIFI units attached to buildings/lamp posts etc. along the route.
