Bands that have played in the Isle of Man

The lead singer of "Smokie" lives not very far from the QB.

And Smokie in 1975 or '76. It was before Alice and all that. And obviously way before the er, revamped version.

Back on the subject of local bands, who remembers the island's very own glam rock outfit Fallen Idol?

Wasn't that the boy band who had more make-up than Barbara Cartland at a wedding? Stripper-gram transexuals as I recall.

Has anyone mentioned  Dan Mcafferty of Nazareth? I think he may have been living King Edward Road way, now he was a bad, bad boy!.

Do keep up at the back there.

I think some of the Nazareth boys lived at the top of Ballasalla for a while in the 70's. Very under-rated band that did some interesting stuff, and Dan had a great set of lungs. Wasn't he asked to join AC/DC when Bon died ? Now that would've been worth seeing....

Dan and the lads could regularly be found enjoying a drink at the long-gone Grosvenor at the end of Athol Street. Local band Nasty Piece of Work had a rented farmhouse where the college car park is now, top of Willaston. 3 quid entry and you could drink all you wanted from a little bar and on a Saturday night the lads from Naz and on occasion, from Badfinger, along with local musos, would jam into the wee hours. That'd be '74-'75.

Those were the days Judy. Always a party on somewhere. Remember the after-pub parties on Port Skillen beach?

Friday night Douglas head to watch Black Mass, who were an excellent and tight band. After they split up it was Exile on a friday, and Saturday night Rock disco. Then there was Nasty Piece of work at the Soderick. When Nasties were on form they were class. The Free songs in their set sounded like Free. Dave Henthorn's rendition of Kossof's guitar work was note perfect, Jerry Christian even sounded like Paul Rogers and Dick Raine captured the mood of Andy Fraser's loping and sparce bass playing perfectly. Timmy McDowell, without the drink in him captured Simon Kirke's back beat to the letter. End of the evening, whoever could stand up straight, drove home along Marine Drive but after people going over the cliff and the deaths of a couple of punters the cops became a little more interested in what was going on. Even more so when Hippy Corkhill managed to reverse 100 foot down a sheer bank in the Cooper S into the glen, sustaining quite severe injuries. His girlfriend at time also seriously injured. Both places were always heaving too, with regular visits by the fire officer due to overcrowding threatening to close the place down. Great times...

Lived IoM since mid 1980s. His eldest son tragically  killed here on a motorbike accident in 2001.

Chris Norman "Don't Knock The Rock Tour 2018"

Big in Europe.

I think the additional words to Living Next Door To Alice are now engrained into the DNA of every audience:
