Running maybe, not controlling.  And certainly not controlling with their own betterment as the first priority.

Who is controlling the island, it's not CM Quayle!

Maybe there is a battle on between Cabinet Office and Treasury

I anticipate the Cabinet Office will win out, one way or another

There's a very interesting little remark in that audioclip where he said "There are civil servants who keep information from politicians".  It's a pity he wasn't picked up on it.  He also says that various topics have "Come to the fore because of the activities of people and their representatives", which suggests that public opinion is having some effect.and he expands on that in the video clip.  Which hints that at least some things happen in spite of the civil service rather than because of them (think of Allinson's Abortion Bill).

His assurance that there are "Some politicians who are on top of the political agenda at the moment" is hardly a complete and unambiguous endorsement of his colleagues, is it?  Again you get the impression that he feels there's only a few such as himself and Hooper prepared to actually push for changes while the rest just 'go with the flow' and do whatever the civil service tell them to do (he made similar remarks before he became a Minister).  It's a more revealing interview than a first reaction tells you.

Who is setting the political agenda?

The usual Vested interests which includes bit part Politicos, Quangos, Third Sector, and Business Bodies.

IOMNP Facebook page and it’s admnistrator - it’s rather amazing Chris Thomas is busy answering and challenging the members opinions, intermixing with his own unique take to everyday island problems, which incidentally he brought up with his embargoed interview. If a report was being laid before the keys or Tynpotwald, I could understand the brief moment of waffle and bullshit.

Chris is one of the few clever bods in Government. We should think ourselves lucky to have him.

FFS, look at about 75% of those in Government who are simply stupid and being paid to do jack shit.

I think “ Wrighty” hit the nail on the head in saying we should pay double to half the amount of heads. I am sure we would then get decent people standing instead of some of these deadheads, who play at being important.

This means CTs agenda, even vision. To his eternal credit, it doesn't seem to be to win votes, but is far too idealistic and UK centric for the Island's way of being. So what he actually means is come over politicians are trying to bully Manx folk into reform they know is destined to fail. And overcoming their will loosely translates to playing the 'do you know who I am' card. Hardly a way to win sustainable hearts and minds.

I see and hear this a lot. What has he actually achieved though? Or does he just have better PR than the rest? Willing to be convinced.

Oh I am sure he is re-arranging & correcting stuff in the manner of the technocrat that he is

My only concern is he's keeping Quayle & the rest of the gang in government

Chris Thomas is the waffling mans waffler. A buzzword mans buzzworder. He's found his niche in life. Never has a man ever said so little by saying so much

CT road in to town solving means testing where all before him failed.

But wait, what's that... means testing is complex...

Duh, who knew :weee:

Chris Thomas can ramble and talk for hours without saying anything of value.   He has done nothing of any significance to date.   King of the Waffle and as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Chris Thomas actually believes all the shit the senior civil servants feed him to spout. He really does. He's a nice guy and nice guys like to be liked and there's plenty of that from government employees who want to progress on up the gravy train to the golden pension and more. Of all the MHKs he is the one that the CS love the most. Putty in their hands.

Oh, and watch the next general election loom. The civil service gently let their little pets go to do their electioneering and snuggle back in with the voters for a few months. The cs are adept at all this and have a lot more experience than the shiny faced politicians. They'll let their charges have their little love affair with the electorate, but they know full well they'll soon be back in bed with them once the election is over.
