Wild goats

Recommended Posts

http://www.three.fm/news/isle-of-man-news/make-sure-goats-are-seen-and-herd/

An MHK in the north of the Island is warning drivers about a flock of wild goats this morning.

Garff member Daphne Caine took to Twitter earlier to warn motorists about the herd, showing photos of them running around near roads.

In January, she asked questions in Tynwald about the animals after locals reported problems with some becoming aggressive.

This morning, she warned they were at risk of running into the road and asked drivers to take care.

I personaly have never seen any wild goats, never mind a herd of them, is she just Kidding, or is there really Kids running wild around the island ?

They were tame / pet goats which escaped ~ 70 years ago or so from somewhere between Maughold and Laxey. Take a walk down Dhoon glen, you'll often see them around there.

Didn`t think goats could live that long.

Best road sign over here is on the way up to Bulgham from Laxey, a big exclamation mark with the warning GOATS. So it isn't as if there isn't any warning.

They can quite often be seen from the Laxey to Ramsey coast road on the headland fields in the Bulgham area. Been a feature for many years.

Hopefully we'll get coachloads of cruiseship visitors up to see them

'A child, a nurse, a fireman and a priest are stuck in the tunnel of goats'. It's becoming more like Craggy Island every day!

There was a farmer up near Bulgham who used to regularly ‘thin’ the herd. Since he’s gone they seem to be everywhere.

I have occasionally wondered whether there would be any legal issue if you took a few for yourself, either as pets or for meat.

There was a bit of a stir a year or so when it was reported in local press that one had been shot as it "had become a problem" invading gardens up Lonan way and being aggressive towards people it encountered. It was reported as being covered in ticks and parasites IIRC.

That one is the one that was after getting them culled, pity some of the MHKs did not get culled, there are far too many and cause more problems than a few goats.   If I could have a choice which ones would go Beecroft and herself would be hot favourites, the panto season is coming up so they would get a job in Cinderella.

Much like mutton, best in a curry IMHO.

They have been there for 40 years plus, they commute using the tram lines, I have seen them as far down as Minorca, raiding gardens for munchies.
