2112 2,174
The latest steaming pile trumped by Chris Thomas, Deputy Chief Minister, and heavily promoted by the National Broadcaster, Manx Radio - https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/gdp-up-by-7-4/ We had this bullshit endlessly trotted out under Bell. Again, whilst this is undoubtedly is wonderful, and I’m sure the Cabinet Office will be partying into the night at the news, which will no doubt mean bonuses all round, and an increase in staff, so they can all hold each other’s hand. This will be picked up by UK Civil Servants, after all how can we plead poverty when our economy is booooooooming according to these figures, as compared to the recent UK GDP figures. Still it will Manx Gas and Manx Utilities an excuse to increase charges, on the assumption that we are a wealthy island. 4

gettafa 6,542
2112 makes an interesting point. The introduction to the epic jargon filled interview with Chris Thomas on Manx Radio Mandate* yesterday was marvellous: Quote Now it was a cold day almost a year ago the 10th November 2017 when the er death knell sounded for one of the headline figures that the Isle of Man used to pride itself on: “32 years of unbroken economic growth” was the slogan wasn’t it. Well that all came to an end when it stalled on that cold and blustery November day. The world has 9/11 as a date to remember. Maybe we should have 10/11 https://www.manxradio.com/radioplayer/od/items/1479/ @ 0:42:30 Edited September 18, 2018 by gettafa
Uhtred 10,182
Why was epic bellend Thomas ever popular with a coterie of posters on these pages? Was it not spotted what a fount of garbage the man is from the outset? The moment he took up his Keys seat he treated us to drivel of the highest quality in an unremitting stream. If ever you need a reminder of the paucity of quality available to fill the seats around the COMIN table, just sit back and listed to the flow of vacuous twaddle that this prat excels in. Lord help us.
Albert Tatlock 11,591
Any GDP reporting is usually done just in time to soften up the masses for some mega spendthrift wastage in the pipeline. Ports and the Steam Racket this time. Meaningless drivel to the average working man, who's pay and cost of living is totally unrelated to GDP, GNI, GNUs or Zebras. 3
the stinking enigma 11,448
If there's one thing manxforums demand out of any prospective mhk, it's an ability to bullshit. Anyone with a touch of honesty or actually not much to say are discounted immediately
Non-Believer 12,873
I think what popularity he initially gleaned was in his initial "opposition" stance; asking awkward questions, making life uncomfortable. Alf Cannan was the same, ripping into Eddie Teare's Budget spiel. And Chris Robertshaw with his exposé of the IRIS debacle that was promply quietly shelved upon receipt of Ministerial position. As soon as they get their "feet under the establishment table" and take the CM's shilling - All change like a light switch. 4
2112 2,174
#Guess who’s back, back again, Howard’s back# Having conveniently escaped the rally screwup, and keeping schtum generally, he’s just opened his gob regarding Brexit to his favourite National Government Mouthpiece Manx Radio. https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/cm-sets-out-islands-brexit-plan/ All this legislation being planned, are they going to get it passed in time? Presumably all the Tynpotwalders will be sweetened accordingly to pass the legislation, with little debate! Just to add a little balance to the thread, I’m sure our politicos will be wetting themselves, deliriously happy at the thought of thousands of tourists entering Government owned installations, giving them the golden opportunity to spend £100m+ on harbour facilities and cruise liner berths. Think of the GDP figures they will cry! http://www.three.fm/news/isle-of-man-news/record-cruise-numbers-for-island-in-2018/
Albert Tatlock 11,591
A no-deal Brexit is the IOM civil service dream. There'll be 300 vacancies, 500 promotions, 600 new executive posts and a pension wankathon within weeks. 1

Lord help us. What a hideous individual you are. Chris Thomas is very well regarded by his constituents and the general public because he is highly intelligent, a good communicator, engages with people, is very approachable, and more to the point he is personally responsible for pushing through a reform agenda over the past few years, which is entirely in keeping with everything he said in his position as a backbench MHK. But he is also very modest and doesn't go around trying to take credit for things, so you won't see him posting photos of himself with advertorials promoting himself all over Facebook like certain politicians. He has been very consistent and exhibited integrity. I would also say from experience with civil servants that he is also well liked by them[1] as well because he is known to be extraordinarily hard working and a good person. Another reason Chris Thomas is popular is because unlike a number of the politicians, he is not a career politician for whom public service offers the highest salary they'll ever get: he could be making more money as a private citizen. He is in public office because he has a set of principles and genuinely in it to make a difference. [1] That's very rare. Usually they slag politicians off. He certainly don't need to suck away on the social medias no more.
