Don't forget that half the money raised by the fire fighter lot's song goes to the original "charity". I cant emphasize the inverted commas too much.

Little directly, the songwriter royalties went to the charity. He doesn’t seem to take a salary from the charity. 

It did raise his profile, he wrote an autobiography shortly after that sold millions and used that money to invest in businesses like TV production companies. 

Obviously since Band Aid doors are open to him, that aren’t open to Kevin Rowland or Terry Hall. But I doubt that was foreseeable in 1984.
