If they pay off the debt it will blow half of our reserves but it may stop our obsession with natural gas. I wouldn't mind if we owned the local gas company but they are promoting a private business that many local residents are unhappy with. As for paying for renewable sources they could sell bonds in the wind farm to fund the building of them. It would bring jobs to the island as well both for the building and the maintenance. Given that we are a tiny island with a small population I don't understand why we can't set ourselves up as an example to the world. It could be a USP to encourage people to live here ad stay here. There seems to be a fear in the Government which was highlighted in a debate in Tynwald the other day where I believe it was Boot saying something along the lines of we shouldn't do anything until some other jurisdiction has done it first or until the UK has done it. Cannabis, assisted dying, abortion, plastic bag tax, sugar tax, electric cars, funding the Health Services rather than cutting it's budget etc etc. It used be that the Island was promoted in the financial industry as a place willing to be bold in terms of legislation but well regulated and one that could legislate quickly. This just simply isn't true. The Govt need to dare to different rather than bleeting behind everyone else.
