Daddy Bush

Is dead.

Revisionist sure, but in light of the current loon you could probably argue he wasn't that bad. Saved Kuwait from the evil Saddam.

The Bush family are a good example of where wealth ambition ability and luck can get you.

Weighing up which contributed more or less to their successes is the pub- and historical-debate.

Senior proved his ability in war and running the CIA. He also proved his statesmanship as the Cold War ended and in the Gulf War.

A decent president notwithstanding his tendency to feel up young ladies from his wheelchair.

The first gulf war was a decisive victory for the US and allies. The Iraqis were kicked out of Kuwait, had to give their claims to Kuwait and had to allow biological, gas and nuclear weapons inspectors into the country.

The only big contentious issue was that they left Saddam in charge. After the allies had encouraged the Shia in the South and Kurds in the North to rebel they walked away and left Saddam to crush them. This, together with the fact that he stayed in charge allowed Saddam to proclaim victory for himself - but that was ludicrous.

According to some, he had JFK's blood on his hands. And his son the blood of 3000 on 9/11. Conspiracy theories maybe - but neither would surprise me in the least.

Well, it was a success because the stated aim of the war was the liberation of Kuwait, not regime change in Iraq.
